Bangladesh's Yunus dials PM Modi, assures 'safety, security' of Hindus and minorities in the country

Chief adviser of Bangladesh’s interim government Muhammad Yunus held telephonic conversation with Prime Minister Narendra Modi during which he assured the “safety and protection” of all minorities in the country

As  Bangladesh’s interim government navigates through new challenges, the body’s chief adviser Muhammad Yunus dialled Prime Minister Narendra Modi. In a post on X, formerly known as Twitter, PM Modi said that he had a telephone conversation with Yunus.

During the conversation, the two leaders discussed the plight of Hindus in Bangladesh and Yunus assured the “safety and protection” of all minorities in the country. “Received a telephone call from Professor Muhammad Yunus, @ChiefAdviserGoB. Exchanged views on the prevailing situation. Reiterated India’s support for a democratic, stable, peaceful and progressive Bangladesh,” PM Modi wrote on X.

“He assured the protection, safety and security of Hindus and all minorities in Bangladesh,” he added. Yunus was appointed as the head of Bangladesh’s interim government following a nationwide anti-government protests. The demonstrations which eventually turned violent, led to the fall of the Sheikh Hasina government. After ending her 15-year-long reign, the former Bangladeshi premier fled from Dhaka and is currently in India.

The plight of Hindus in Bangladesh

While the country was in complete shambles there were several reports that the members of the Bengali Hindu community in Bangladesh had faced attacks following the ouster of Hasina.

After Yunus assumed his office he called for the complete halt of attacks against Hindus and other minority communities in Bangladesh. Some of the irate mobs and miscreants viewed the Bengali Hindu community in Bangladesh as sympathetic to the Awami League.

On Tuesday, the Bangladesh National Hindu Grand Alliance, which represents Hindus in Bangladesh said that the minority Hindu community faced attacks and threats in 278 locations across 48 districts since the fall of the Sheikh Hasina-led government on August 5. The body described it as an “assault on the Hindu religion,” News18 reported. “We too have rights in this country, we were born here," the apex body said at a press conference.

Other minority groups in the country have also faced arson, looting and attacks on their businesses after the protests ended.
