Bangladesh: Yunus targets Hasina in appeal for peace, says she ‘continues to try to mobilise her militants’

Bangladesh’s Chief Advisor Muhammad Yunus on Friday appealed to citizens to maintain law and order in the country days after a mob torched down founder Sheikh Mujibur Rahman’s residence in Dhaka.

“The anger of the activists who have attacked properties is understandable because they and their relatives and friends lived through years of tyranny under Hasina. Despite this understanding, the Government appeals to the citizens to abide by the law to show the world we are a nation that respects of the rule of law,” Yunus said in a statement.

He added that Bangladesh’s interim government is sympathetic to the “outrage of activists” and is aware that even in refuge in New Delhi, former prime minister Sheikh Hasina continues to “mobilise her militants” in the country.

“For the citizens who rose up and overthrew the Hasina regime in July and August to realise their dreams for the country, it is imperative to prove to ourselves and our friends around the world that our commitment to our principles – respecting one another’s civil and human rights and acting under the law – is unshakable,” the interim government’s head further said.

Mob vandalises Rahman’s property

Earlier this week, a mob vandalised and set fire to the residence of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the founding leader of Bangladesh and the father of deposed Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

The incident took place just a day after Hasina delivered an online speech urging Awami League supporters to protest against the interim government led by Muhammad Yunus.

The protesters arrived in bulldozers and threatened to demolish the house in the Dhanmondi 32 area. Ultimately, they opted not to bring it down but broke the main gate, vandalised the property, and set it ablaze.

The attackers said the house was a symbol of “authoritarianism and fascism” and vowed to remove traces of what they termed as ‘Mujibism’ in the country.

‘Yunus tried to kill me’

Meanwhile, Hasina, who is in exile in New Delhi, claimed that Yunus tried to “kill her” and that Bangladesh has become the “land of terrorists and militants”.

In a speech delivered online, the Awami League supremo said, “A game of destruction has started around Bangladesh, which is going through a phase of chaos and upheaval. Bangladesh, which was a role model of development across the world, has become the land of terrorists and militants. This is indeed a matter of great misfortune for us all.”

Slamming Yunus and his governance, Hasina said, “He has come to power using money power and by stepping on the dead bodies of many people of our country.”
