The interim government of Bangladesh has clarified that the status of ‘Muktijoddha’ or freedom fighter has not been revoked for ‘Bangabandhu’ Mujibur Rahman.

Earlier during the day, Firstpost had reported that the government in Bangladesh had removed former prime minister Sheikh Hasina’s father Sheikh Mujibut Rahman from the freedom fighter category based on media reports.

However, Faruk-e-Azam, advisor to the Ministry of Liberation War Affairs, has said that Rahman, along with all the other 400 leaders named in the news reports, are still recognised as Muktijoddha.

“Under the JAMUKA (National Freedom Fighters’ Council) ordinance, individuals such as diplomats and those affiliated with Swadhin Bangla Betar Kendra are also considered associate freedom fighters. He emphasised that the term “associate” does not imply any reduction in respect or honour,” Azam said in a statement.

A Bir Muktijoddha is recognised as an individual who, between March 26 and December 16, 1971, either underwent training within villages across Bangladesh or crossed into India to join training camps, to fight in the Liberation War. These individuals actively participated in the struggle against the occupying Pakistani forces to secure Bangladesh’s independence.

Last weekend, Bangladesh introduced new banknotes without the picture of Rahman. The new design of the currency notes will portray natural landscapes and traditional landmarks.

Bangladesh Bank spokesman Arif Hossain Khana, told AFP, “Under the new series and design, the notes will not feature any human portraits, but will instead showcase natural landscapes and traditional landmarks.”
