A training aircraft belonging to the Bangladesh Air Force crashed onto a school campus in the country’s capital, Dhaka, killing at least 20 persons.
At least 20 people have been killed in the crash at the Milestone College campus, Shahjahan Shikder, and 171 have been injured, according to the Bangladeshi military.
Most of those injured are schoolchildren and around 70 of the injured were undergoing treatment in hospitals for burns, Sayedur Rahman, a Special Assistant to the interim ruler Muhammed Yunus, previously told BBC Bangla.
The crash occurred at Uttara area of Dhaka on Monday afternoon.
The pilot of the plane, identified as Flight Lieutenant Mohammad Towkir Islam, was among those killed, according to the Inter-Services Public Relations (PR), the communications wing of the Bangladeshi military.
The fighter jet involved in the crash was an F-7 BGI, which the country purchased from China . As per the official document, each F-7 jet costs $5.85 million.
The authorities noted that children were present inside the school at the time of the crash, leading to a high casualty. Fire and rescuers from the military arrived at the scene soon after the crash.

It is pertinent to note that Bangladesh purchased the jet back in 2022 from China. As per the Bangladeshi authorities, the F-7 BGI is a multi-role capable aircraft manufactured by Chengdu Aircraft Corporation in China.
