Passengers onboard an Air India flight to Delhi suffered a 10-hour trip back to the US when the aircraft was forced to return to Chicago because all but one of its toilets was reportedly clogged and inoperable.
According to the New York Post, Air India Flight 126 was making its way over Greenland on March 5 when 11 of its 12 toilets broke down.
Only one toiled was functioning in the business class section, and there were 300 passengers who were onboard at the time of the incident.
The plane carried on like this for nearly five hours into the 14-hour trip. However, it was eventually forced to head back to Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport when things went out of hand.
Air India reacts to the debacle.
The airliner released a statement regarding the debacle. “Upon landing at Chicago, all passengers and crew disembarked normally and have been provided with accommodation to minimize inconvenience,” the company said in a statement, citing only a “technical issue.” “Alternative arrangements are being made to fly the passengers to their destination,” the statement further read.
Air India also noted that it would offer refunds for the cancellation, however, passengers argued that it would provide relief to some customers. According to The New York Post, some of the passengers claimed that they were forced to “jump through hoops” to get their flights rescheduled or refunded.
One customer noted that they had booked a first-class ticket for their cousin to fly for a wedding in India using their travel LifeMiles with the Avianca airliner. “We’re now in the midst of customer service hell with Avianca, Lifemiles and Air India to figure out how to get a refund for the miles ticket,” the frustrated client told View From the Wing.
It is important to note that such incidents are not uncommon for airliners. Even just one or two clogged toilets are enough to trigger a flight crew to turn the plane around and land due to the limited number of lavatories available.
