Afghanistan: Dozens killed, injured as heavy snowfall hits several provinces

Over the past three days, there has been widespread, heavy snowfall in numerous Afghan provinces, which has tragically resulted in the deaths of fifteen people and the injury of about thirty more.

A TOLOnews report states that data from the provinces of Balkh and Faryab show that the recent snowfall has had a disastrous effect on cattle, with around ten thousand animals dying.

The Ministry of Agriculture, Irrigation, and Livestock’s Taliban-appointed spokesperson, Misbahuddin Mustaeen, emphasized the prompt action of committees established in every province. These committees are hard at work clearing blocked roads, providing impacted areas with food and fuel, and rescuing individuals left behind following the significant snowfall.

In response to the issue, Afghanistan announced the formation of a panel with representatives from multiple ministries to address the damages, particularly to livestock owners. The government has allocated fifty million Afghanis to support livestock owners in the provinces of Jawzjan, Balkh, Badghis, Faryab, and Herat.

Misbahuddin Mustaeen, the Taliban-appointed spokesman for the Ministry of Agriculture, Irrigation, and Livestock, stressed the importance of committees that have been set up in each province acting quickly. These committees are working diligently to clear blocked roads, supply food and fuel to affected communities, and rescue those who were left behind after the heavy snowstorm.

According to Esmatullah Muradi, a spokesman for the Faryab provincial governor, the province’s high snowfall caused most district road closures, trapping residents in outlying locations. Sadly, one individual perished in the Chahar Sada district near the border with Turkmenistan.
