77th United Nations Day: History, significance and all you need to know

Every year 24 October is celebrated as the United Nations Day, which marks the anniversary of the United Nations. This year will toast the 77th anniversary of the intergovernmental organisation. Entering into the force, the UN Charter on this day felicitated global cooperation among the nations and reinvigorated inclusive, networked, and effective multilateralism across the globe. The United Nation and its Charter are dedicated to the crucial role of ensuring global peace and safety, primarily. From different wars to the pandemic, time and again, the UN Member States have come together to not only recognise the challenges but also collaboratively lead a response to the problems. The UN plays an immensely crucial role in developing friendly relations among nations, achieving international cooperation, and being at the centre of coordination for different countries. History The United Nations’ name was first coined by the 32nd President of the United States Franklin D. Roosevelt. The name was first used in the Declaration of the United Nations on January 1, 1942, while World War II was still ongoing. However, the United Nations was officially established on October 24, 1945, with 51 members. And two years after this in 1947, the United Nations General Assembly announced the formation of the Charter as one which “shall be devoted to making known to the people of the world the aims and achievements of the United Nations and to gaining their support for its work”. Later to this, in 1971, the UN adopted United Nations Resolution 2782 and declared that United Nations Day will be an international observance. United Nations Day was also declared a public holiday. To date, the intergovernmental organisation has nearly 193 Member States and over 1.5 million participants to support international cooperation and decision-making. Significance Offering the opportunity to amplify the common agenda, the United Nations Day reaffirms the purposes and principles of the UN Charter that has guided the world for the past 77 years. The significance of the United Nations lies in its multilateralism, which has so far allowed all the member nations to express their views on various forums including the General Assembly, the Security Council, the Economic and Social Council, and other bodies. The UN also offers a mechanism for all the governments of different nations to solve issues and reach agreements via negotiations. The United Nations works for the aim and that is to “preserve peace, advance justice and constitute a permanent structure for international cooperation.” Read all the Latest News , Trending News ,  Cricket News , Bollywood News , India News and Entertainment News here.
