Ten people have been arrested in connection with the lynching of a Hindu man in Bangladesh, Chief Adviser of the interim government Muhammad Yunus announced Saturday.

Of the 10, seven were arrested by the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) while three were arrested by the police as suspects in the case, Yunus said in a statement on X.

The RAB and police conducted operations in various locations to arrest these individuals, he said.

The arrests were made during operations at various locations, and the ages of those arrested ranged from 19 to 46.

What was the incident about

Dipu Chandra Das, a young garment factory worker, was lynched to death by an angry mob in Bhaluka, Mymensingh. He was accused of committing blasphemy and was tied up. He was brutally killed, and then his body was set on fire while people watched, in a glaring display of lawlessness and mobocracy in Bangladesh under Yunus’ regime.

“On Thursday, at around 9 pm, an enraged crowd caught him and beat him to death, accusing him of making derogatory remarks about the Prophet. They then set the body on fire," Bhaluka Police duty officer Ripon Mia told BBC Bangla.

The incident sparked outrage and raised concern over the safety of minorities in Bangladesh. Since Yunus came to power as a caretaker head of government, several attacks have targeted the minority Hindu community.

In a statement, the interim government on Friday condemned the lynching of the Hindu man in Mymensingh city, saying there is no space for such violence in the new Bangladesh. “The perpetrators of this heinous crime will not be spared," it added.
