Thousands of migrants working in different fields across the United Kingdom were arrested as Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s administration tightens its grip on the UK’s border security. According to the government data, over 3,000 arrests have been made by immigration enforcement officers since July 5 when the Labour Party came to power.
As per the officials, these arrests were made between July 5 and January 31, marking a 38 per cent increase compared to the previous 12 months, the British foreign office said in an update. Officials believe people are sold false promises about their ability to live and work in the United Kingdom. These promises encouraged these illegal immigrants to take dangerous journeys which are often organised by criminal gangs.
The government stated that law enforcement officials often found these undocumented migrants in squalid conditions working inhuman hours for employers who are also trying to avoid taxes and undercutting competing businesses. The officials noted that the arrested made the journey through a mix of routes including by crossing the English Channel and by overstaying their visas.
From nail bars to car washes: Undoccement migrants are working in different sectors
Most of these arrests were made at nail bars, car washes and convenience stores. UK Home Secretary Yvette Cooper commented on the matter, insisting that the Labour government is boosting enforcement to “record levels”. “The immigration rules must be respected and enforced. For far too long, employers have been able to take on and exploit illegal migrants and too many people have been able to arrive and work illegally with no enforcement action ever taken,” she said.
“Not only does this create a dangerous draw for people to risk their lives by crossing the Channel in a small boat, but it results in the abuse of vulnerable people, the immigration system and our economy," she furthered. Cooper’s office maintained that just in January, there were 828 visits with 609 arrests made, a record high since 2019.
In January last year, there were 556 visits and 352 arrests. Meanwhile, in Wales and the West of England, the number of arrests made in January more than doubled compared with a year earlier, from 45 to 101. “As part of our Plan for Change, we are boosting enforcement to record levels alongside tough new legislation to smash the criminal gangs that undermine our border security and who have been getting away with it for far too long,” Cooper concluded.
