At least five people were killed and 31 were injured after a gas-filled tank exploded at an Industrial estate in Multan, Pakistan. According to Geo News, the deceased included a minor girl and two women. As per the report, the explosion of the tanker triggered a massive fire, with debris from shattered vehicles reaching a nearby residential area.
Rescue officials told the Pakistani news outlet that the fire was extinguished following hours of efforts. At least 10 firefighting vehicles and foam-based fire suppression were deployed at the site to take control of the blaze.
Meanwhile, Multan’s City Police Officer (CPO) Sadiq Ali told Geo News that several houses were destroyed and livestock perished due to the fast-spreading fire. He noted that the gas had been leaking from one of the valves of the tanker truck which was parked inside the industrial estate.
The authorities clarified that some of the people who were present in the area had already been evacuated after smelling the gas before the explosion occurred. The CPO further confirmed that out of the 35 injured in the incident, 13 are reported to be in critical condition.
Soon after the blast, the District Emergency Officer confirmed that an emergency had been declared at Nishtar Hospital, where the injured were taken and are currently receiving treatment. According to the Geo News, the authorities are currently conducting search operations in the adjacent localities to ensure the safety of those who are nearby.
Electricity and gas supply in the area has been temporarily suspended as a precautionary measure. Locals have been advised to stay away from the site of the blast since the gas from the exploded tanker is still in the air. As the rescue and recovery operation progresses, why the leak happened is currently under investigation.
