In fresh comments that have sparked fears about the future of American democracy, Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump has that indicated the United States may never hold elections again if he wins 2024 election.

Addressing a Christian event as part of the election campaign, Trump promised they will never have to vote again if he wins this time.

“Christians, get out and vote. Just this time. You won’t have to do it anymore, you know what? Four more years, it’ll be fixed, it’ll be fine, you won’t have to vote anymore, my beautiful Christians,” said Trump at The Believers’ Summit in Florida.

In recent years, Trump and his far-right Make America Great America (MAGA) movement have turned to Christian nationalism to shore up support. They have repeatedly talked of purported leftist policies that harm Christians to reach out to them and get their support in the election.

Trump, who is known to go into long repetitive statements in his speeches, went on to add: “I love you, Christians. I’m a Christian. I love you, you got to get out and vote. In four years, you don’t have to vote again. We’ll have it fixed so good, you’re not going to have to vote.”

While seeking votes from “beautiful” Christians, Trump also berated them for not voting enough.

“They don’t vote like they should. They’re not big voters," said Trump at the event organised by conservative advocacy group Turning Point Action.

Will United States cease having election under Trump?

Trump has a long history of fawning over authoritarian and totalitarian rulers like Vladimir Putin of Russia and Xi Jinping of China. In the run-up to the election campaign, he has also said that he would appoint his own prosecutors to go after people he does not like if he wins and end the long-running independent prosecution system of the United States.

Along with his other tendencies, such as letting states monitor women’s pregnancies and banning Muslims from the country, Trump has repeatedly sparked fears that his second term could considerably move the United States towards authoritarianism.

Now, by saying that his supporters will never have to vote again, Trump has himself hinted that he could never leave the White House if he is elected and the 2024 presidential election may be the last in the American history.

US President Joe Biden, who dropped out of the race earlier this month, has long projected the 2024 election as a fundamental choice between democracy and authoritarianism. He has long pitched Biden as a fundamental threat to the democracy in the United States.

Sharing the video of Trump’s comments, constitutional and civil rights lawyer Andrew L Seidel said Trump had laid bare his intention to turn the United States into a Christian nation from a secular republic.

He's talking to "my beautiful Christians" here. And saying they won't have to vote again. This is not subtle Christian Nationalism, he's talking about ending our democracy and installing a Christian nation. https://t.co/6vmzel9SAE

‘On day one’: Trump on whether he’d be dictator

The speech to the Christians was not the first time Trump said something along these lines. He has said he would be a dictator before as well.

In an interview with Sean Hannity of Fox News, Trump said that he would be a dictator on day one of his second term.

Once he has done all his dictatorial deeds on day one, Trump said he would cease to be a dictator.

When Hannity asked if Trump promised he “would never abuse power as retribution against anybody”, Trump replied: “Except for day one.”

Trump further said, “We’re closing the border. And we’re drilling, drilling, drilling. After that, I’m not a dictator.”

Moments later, Trump said, “I love this guy [Hannity]. He says, ‘You’re not going to be a dictator, are you?’ I said: ‘No, no, no. Other than Day One.’ We’re closing the border, and we’re drilling, drilling, drilling. After that, I’m not a dictator.”
