Donald Trump Approves UK-Mauritius Deal for Chagos Islands | Firstpost Africa | N18G

The UK has now confirmed that Trump has formally signed off on the proposed deal between the UK and Mauritius regarding the future of the Chagos Islands. It is now up to the UK and the Mauritian government to finalize the deal. However, no timeline has been provided for when both parties will reach an agreement. The Chagos Archipelago is a group of islands in the Indian Ocean that Mauritius claims were illegally detached from its territory by the British in the 1960s. Under the terms of the agreement, the UK will surrender sovereignty of the islands to Mauritius. However, it will lease back Diego Garcia—home to a joint US-UK military base—for an initial period of 99 years. Watch the video for more details.
