Uganda is celebrating the stunning victory of Kampala-born Zohran Mamdani, who has made history as the first Muslim and the youngest mayor of New York City in more than a century. Across Kampala, people cheered and former colleagues recalled his days as a witty radio intern and musician before politics beckoned. Joseph Beyanga, who mentored Mamdani in 2007, called his win “a generational triumph,” while radio host Siima Sabiti remembered him as “creative, funny, and sharp.” Born in Kampala in 1990 to scholar Mahmood Mamdani and filmmaker Mira Nair, Zohran left Uganda as a child but often visits with family. His journey from local newsrooms to New York’s City Hall has become a symbol of possibility and pride.
