Kenyan President William Ruto has offered to mediate the dispute over the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD), which was inaugurated on Tuesday (September 9). Speaking at the dam's inauguration, Ruto also hinted at signing a power purchase agreement with Ethiopia to utilise the dam's resources. The dam is the largest in Africa, and is set to more than double Ethiopia's electricity capacity. However, its inauguration has exacerbated tensions with downstream neighbours, Egypt and the Sudan. Both nations are concerned about the dam's potential to reduce their water supply from the Nile River, which they heavily rely on. Egypt has repeatedly called the dam an "existential threat" and a violation of international law.
