Trump signs ‘Genesis Mission’ order to drive AI-powered scientific breakthroughs

US President Donald Trump has signed an executive order creating the “Genesis Mission,” a new federal initiative intended to accelerate breakthroughs in artificial intelligence. The programme is designed to strengthen government-wide coordination on AI research and expand the use of advanced computing tools across federal agencies.

Michael Kratsios, director of the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy, said the effort will bring together disparate research initiatives and embed AI more deeply into scientific work. Speaking to reporters ahead of the signing, he described the mission as a way to ensure AI becomes central to scientific discovery. “With the power of AI, America is on the brink of a scientific revolution,” Kratsios said on Monday.

Harnessing federal labs and industry partnerships

A key part of the Genesis Mission will involve tapping the vast computing infrastructure of the Department of Energy’s national laboratories. Kratsios said the labs’ resources and federal datasets will support experiments that could significantly shorten the timelines for major scientific advances.

According to a senior administration official, the initiative will also be bolstered by private-sector collaborations. Companies including Nvidia, Dell Technologies, HPE and Advanced Micro Devices are expected to contribute to expanding supercomputing capacity, with their recent announcements serving as a model for future partnerships.

Officials said on Monday that the programme will speed up research in areas such as materials engineering, health sciences and energy, adding that scientific gains could ultimately help production capacity and lower consumer prices, a central focus for the administration.

Addressing energy, grid and cost concerns

The surge in AI usage has raised concerns about the strain that energy-intensive data centres place on the US electric grid. Energy Secretary Chris Wright argued that the Genesis initiative will help manage those pressures by improving efficiency and increasing supply. One of its “ultimate goals” in the energy sector, he said, is to “bring more energy on, make our electricity grid more efficient and reverse price rises that have infuriated American citizens.”

“We are going to stop the rise of the price of energy. First, it will plateau, and ultimately will push downward pressure on the prices of electricity,” Wright said.

Largest effort since Apollo

Earlier in November, Department of Energy Chief of Staff Carl Coe compared the Genesis Mission to landmark US technological efforts such as the space race and the Manhattan Project. On Monday, Kratsios echoed that sentiment, calling it the “largest marshalling of federal scientific resources since the Apollo program”.

Trump has repeatedly highlighted AI as a national priority and has pushed for the US to stay ahead of global competitors, especially China. His administration has issued multiple executive orders aimed at easing regulatory obstacles for AI infrastructure, expanding data centre capacity and helping allied nations access key hardware and software.

The president is also preparing a new order that would allow the Department of Justice to challenge state-level AI rules viewed as unconstitutional, reinforcing his argument for a unified federal standard on AI regulation.
