Oracle has reportedly laid off around 12,000 employees in India, as part of a wider global restructuring aimed at sharpening its focus on artificial intelligence. The move, which affected workers across multiple business units, has triggered uncertainty within the company’s workforce, with insiders warning that further job cuts could follow in the coming weeks.
Early morning emails trigger shock
Many employees, on Reddit , shared that they were informed of their termination through emails sent in the early hours of Tuesday morning, some arriving as early as 6am. The messages stated that their roles had been eliminated with immediate effect, leaving little time for preparation or transition.
The abrupt communication has drawn criticism internally, with workers describing the process as sudden and disorienting.
Layoffs span
While India appears to be among the hardest-hit regions, the job cuts are not limited to one geography. The layoffs are understood to impact parts of Oracle’s computing business across multiple markets, including India and Mexico.
Globally, the company is estimated to have reduced its workforce by around 30,000 employees, signalling a broader realignment rather than a localised restructuring effort.
More job cuts likely soon
Impacted employees have indicated that the current round of layoffs may not be the last. “In India, around 12,000 employees have been laid off. The company is planning another mass layoff within a month,” said two people impacted by the retrenchment, including one from the company’s human resource department.
With Oracle employing roughly 30,000 people in India, the scale of the reported cuts represents a significant portion of its local workforce.
Severance linked to voluntary exits
In its communication to staff, Oracle cited organisational changes and the need to streamline operations. “Because of these changes, a decision has been taken to streamline the operations, and as a result, unfortunately, the position you currently hold will become redundant,” the company said in an email.
The severance package includes 15 days’ salary for each completed year of service, along with leave encashment, gratuity where applicable, and pay for a one-month notice period. Employees are also offered an additional two months’ salary as a top-up.
However, these benefits are contingent on employees opting for voluntary and amicable resignation, a condition that has raised concerns among some affected workers.
AI investments drive restructuring
The layoffs are part of a broader strategic shift as Oracle reallocates resources towards high-priority artificial intelligence initiatives. The move reflects a wider trend across the technology sector, where companies are trimming headcount in traditional business areas to fund AI development.
Other tech giants, including Amazon, have also cut thousands of jobs in recent months as they redirect spending towards AI infrastructure and innovation.
The scale and timing of Oracle’s layoffs highlight the growing impact of AI-led transformation on global employment, particularly in major tech hubs such as India.
