Dell has launched its next-generation XPS 13 laptops in India. These new laptops, while very similar in design to the laptops they replace, are vastly different animals on the inside.
In person, the sheer diminutiveness of the XLS 13 never ceases to amaze. It’s a surprisingly small device that oozes quality. Everything from the screen to that finish feels amazing, and now that internals have been upgraded to match that svelte exterior.
On the inside, a lot has changed. The biggest, most noticeable update is the inclusion of an 8th gen Intel CPU. The CPU is the brains in your laptop and the faster it is, the more cores it has, the faster your computing experience. Intel’s 8th gen CPUs effectively double the core count, increasing performance by over 40 percent in some cases. Better yet, insulation is provided via Gore-Tex insulation, which is a form of silica aerogel used in the likes of the Mars rover and various satellites to provide thermal insulation. The body is made from fiberglass.
The insulator will ensure that heat stays away from areas that you are likely to touch, including the underside of the device and under the palmrest.
CPU options include an Intel Core i5-8250U and Intel Core i7-8550U. Dell claims that its thermal solution ensures that performance is maintained at higher loads than the competition.
Storage options include either 256 GB or 512 GB of high-speed SSD storage (via PCIe SSDs) and up to 16 GB of RAM. Sadly, the 1 TB option showcased at CES 2018 will not be immediately available in India.
For the display, you get a gorgeous 13.3-inch 4K UHD display or a more basic FHD display. The 4K display is also HDR-ready, meaning that you can enjoy images and video that showcase a larger number of colours than normal.
Weighing just 1.21 kg and featuring a thickness of a mere 11.6 mm, the XPS 13 is understandably limited in I/O, though Dell does offer more than Apple. The XPS 13 features 2x Thunderbolt 3 ports on the left, 1x USB-C 3.1 port on the right, a microSD card reader and a headphone jack.
While it’s certainly more powerful than previous XPS devices, Dell is also claiming a battery life of 19 hrs and 46 min.
The laptops will go on sale immediately on the Dell website and will be available in Rose Gold, Alpine White, Platinum Silver and Black Carbon Fibre. The devices will also go on sale at third-party stores from 20 February onwards.
The pricing structure is as follows:
Core i5 with FHD display: Rs 94,790
Core i7 with FHD display: Rs 1,41,490
Core i7 with UHD display: Rs 1,59,790
