Google Pixel 4 may come with iPhone XS-like Dual-SIM Dual-Standby functionality

We are still a good few months away from witnessing Google’s annual hardware event where the company unveils its flagship series of the year. But the rumour mill has provided a fair amount of information about Google’s smartphone plans for this year. While the Mountain View company is widely anticipated to introduce cheaper variants of the **Google Pixel 3** series, the **Pixel 3 Lite** and Pixel 3 XL Lite, this spring, a new report now shares insights on the Google Pixel 3 successor, the Pixel 4. [caption id=“attachment_5401651” align=“alignnone” width=“1024”]Representational image of Google Pixel 3 XL. Image: tech2/Prannoy Palav Representational image of Google Pixel 3 XL. Image: tech2/Prannoy Palav[/caption] As per a recent commit spotted in the Android Open Source Project Gerrit, the 2019 Pixel device might have dual SIM support. The AOSP Gerrit commits that were spotted by XDA Developers indicate that is Google adding property values in the framework for identifying for dual SIM functionality. Notably, both Google Pixel 2 and Pixel 3 include a regular SIM slot and an eSIM slot, however, one cannot use both the regular SIM and eSIM network simultaneously, as stated by Google in its @MadeByGoogle Twitter account. This simply means that even though the **Google** device might have two SIMs, only the active can receive calls and texts. Given that most Android phones come with support for dual SIMs, it’s indeed frustrating that Google’s premium phones don’t support the feature. Meanwhile, Apple’s latest iPhones support DSDS or Dual SIM Dual Standby, meaning the second SIM can receive calls and texts if the primary SIM isn’t being used actively used for the same purpose. Thankfully, Google is said to be implementing DSDS functionality in its upcoming Pixel smartphone. Folks at XDA Developers note that several commits submitted to the AOSP Gerrit define support for “dual SIM mode” in Google’s upcoming Android OS, Android Q. As per the report, a Googler in the new AOSP commit Gerrit thread stated that the “boolean will be set to true in 2019 devices by default and that it is required to differentiate 2018 Pixel (which has 2 SIM cards, but dual SIM functionality is restricted to dogfooding) from 2019 Pixel (which will have dual SIM functionality).” Apart from the supposed dual-SIM functionality, other details about the Google Pixel 4 are scarce at the moment. However, a Geekbench listing of the purported Pixel 4 last month suggested that the device could come with Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 SoC. The device with the codename ‘Coral’ was seen sporting 6 GB of RAM.
