Looks like
Google’s
annus horribilis nears its end on a funny note — an idiotic one. During the Congressional hearing
of company CEO
Sundar Pichai
, he was asked, quite cleverly by Democratic Congresswoman Zoe Lofgren to explain the process of Google image search for the term ‘idiot’ which threw US President Donald Trump’s image. It continues to. Now, Pichai might have responded saying that Google crawled and stored copies of billions of web pages in its index, took the keyword, and matched it against the pages, and ranked them based on over 200 signals — and Lofgren might have understood that it wasn’t “some little man sitting behind the curtain figuring out what to show the user", but the audiences clearly understood one thing — let’s go Google search for the word ‘Idiot.’ Result: ‘idiot’ became the top of most searched for terms in the US, according to Google Trends as reported
by the BBC. [caption id=“attachment_5723791” align=“alignnone” width=“1280”] Poster of Donald Trump. Image: Unsplash[/caption] The link between ‘Idiot’ and pictures of Trump were in the limelight earlier this year in July. The trend
began with Reddit users upvoting a post containing a photo of Trump and the word. In India, we’ve seen ‘Feku’ for prime minister Narendra Modi and ‘pappu’ for Congress president Rahul Gandhi. Stuff like this can sometimes provide you with a minute comic relief, which is the fun part — but here’s what not fun: An eleven-year-old Delaware boy Joshua Trump would rather be called Joshua Berto because his surname has led to him being increasingly bullied
, ever since Donald Trump began campaigning. “They curse at him, they call him an idiot,” says Megan Trump, Joshua’s mother, who isn’t related to the US president in any way. He was pulled out of school and home-schooled for a year. He “hates himself, and he hates his last name, and he feels sad all the time.” We don’t know what to say.
