Instagram, the social media platform owned by Meta, experienced widespread disruptions on Wednesday, leaving users across several regions struggling to access key features. Many reported that direct messages (DMs) were not sending or loading, while others faced problems opening the app or publishing posts.
Data from Downdetector showed a sharp surge in complaints around 8.45 AM, suggesting the outage may have affected a large number of users simultaneously.
Instagram down: What are the issues users facing?
Most reports pointed to issues within the app itself, although some users also encountered server connection errors. The disruption quickly sparked reactions on social media, with frustrated users turning to other platforms to check whether the problem was widespread. Meta has not yet issued an official statement on the cause of the outage.
Around 74 per cent of users reported that the Instagram app either failed to load properly or froze while they were browsing. Many said the platform became unresponsive while scrolling through posts or trying to access different sections of the app.
Another 18 per cent of reports pointed to server connection issues. In these cases, users were unable to refresh their feeds or open profile pages, suggesting that the app was struggling to communicate with Instagram’s backend servers.
A smaller share of complaints, roughly 4 per cent, related to problems with the home feed. Some users said posts were not loading at all, while others experienced long delays before images or videos appeared.
User comments on outage forums also paint a picture of growing frustration. Several people reported that the app stopped working without warning, even after restarting their devices. Others said posts, images and reels refused to load, leaving them stuck on blank screens.
Some users also noted that they were unable to refresh their home feed or view stories. In a few cases, errors appeared when they tried to open profiles or interact with posts.
