Google has officially launched Veo 2, its cutting-edge AI video generation model, and the tool is already making waves. Designed to take on OpenAI’s recently released Sora, Veo 2 offers a major leap in video quality and functionality, promising to reshape how AI-generated videos are created and consumed.

While OpenAI has led the charge in many areas of AI, Veo 2’s features could put Google at the forefront of the rapidly growing AI video market.

Veo 2’s edge over OpenAI’s Sora

A key highlight of Veo 2 is its ability to produce videos in stunning 4K resolution, a significant upgrade over Sora Turbo’s 1080p maximum output. This advancement positions Google’s model as a leader in visual quality, catering to users seeking more refined and detailed video outputs.

Additionally, Google has emphasised Veo 2’s enhanced understanding of real-world physics and human movement, which addresses one of Sora’s biggest criticisms: its inability to render natural-looking motion.

In testing, Veo 2 outperformed Sora Turbo on the MovieGenBench dataset, a benchmark for evaluating AI video tools. When participants were shown over 1,000 prompts and videos, Veo 2 was preferred 58.8 per cent of the time, compared to 26.7 per cent for Sora Turbo. While a single test doesn’t paint the full picture, it’s a promising start for Veo 2, indicating that Google’s focus on cinematic realism is paying off.

Expanding Google’s AI ecosystem

Veo 2 is not just a standalone product; it’s part of Google’s broader vision to integrate AI tools across its ecosystem. Currently available in the US via a waitlist, the video generation tool is expected to roll out to platforms like YouTube Shorts next year.

By doing so, Google could make professional-grade AI video generation accessible to content creators, marketers, and hobbyists alike.

The company has hinted at Veo 2’s versatility, suggesting it could be used across a variety of industries, from entertainment to education. Its advanced understanding of human expression and movement makes it a compelling option for those looking to create lifelike videos without relying on high-end production teams.

How to access Veo 2

For those eager to try Veo 2, early access is currently limited to users in the US who are over 18 years old. To join the waitlist, users can head to the Google Labs website, log into their Google account, and fill out an early access form. Google will notify participants once they gain access to the tool.

As Veo 2 enters the spotlight, it raises the bar for AI video generation. Its high-resolution capabilities and focus on realism could make it the go-to tool for creators. Whether it will ultimately outshine OpenAI’s Sora remains to be seen, but the competition is bound to drive innovation, benefiting users eager to explore the potential of AI-generated content.
