Google updates Gemini AI Assistant with Utilities extension can now control smartphone tasks

Google’s Gemini AI assistant has taken a leap forward with a new Utilities extension, allowing it to handle everyday smartphone tasks. Announced earlier this year at Google I/O, this update is now rolling out to Android devices, though it might take a few weeks for everyone to see it. With this extension, users can control essential phone functions like alarms, timers, volume settings, and even the camera—all through natural language commands.

Previously, Gemini fell short when it came to device-related tasks, relying on separate app extensions or Google Assistant for help. Now, with Utilities, Gemini is better equipped to streamline interactions, making it more useful and intuitive for Android users.

Setting up Utilities: What You Need to Know

To access the new features, users must ensure Gemini is set as their device’s default assistant. The extension currently supports only English-language prompts, so those hoping for multilingual commands will need to wait for future updates.

Once enabled, the Utilities extension enhances Gemini’s capabilities significantly. It allows users to combine multiple tasks in a single voice command — for example, setting an alarm, enabling Do Not Disturb mode, and opening a specific website simultaneously. This eliminates the hassle of juggling between different apps or assistants, delivering a smoother, more integrated experience.

A game-changer for device management

The Utilities extension brings Gemini up to par with other virtual assistants by letting it handle tasks like setting alarms, turning on the flashlight, and managing Bluetooth, DND, and Battery Saver modes. Users can even check their phone’s battery level, adjust volume settings, or restart the device, all with a simple voice prompt.

For media lovers, the AI assistant can now control playback, pausing or skipping tracks on media apps. It also opens the Camera app to snap photos or capture screenshots—tasks that were previously out of reach for Gemini. Some of these functions, like controlling alarms and timers, even work from the lock screen, adding an extra layer of convenience.

A smoother, smarter Gemini

The Utilities extension addresses a long-standing issue for Gemini by making it more capable and versatile. By enabling the assistant to perform essential smartphone tasks seamlessly, Google has made Gemini a stronger contender in the virtual assistant space.

For Android users who rely on AI for daily convenience, this upgrade marks a significant step forward. Whether it’s managing device settings or combining multiple commands, Gemini is now better equipped to make life a little easier.
