Google’s big annual developer gathering, Google I/O, kicks off today on May 14. For those interested to watch the latest that Google ahs to announce, they can catch the live stream of all the sessions on Google’s social media handles, as well as Google’s own YouTube channel. Now, there’s been a lot of buzz about Google unveiling the Pixel 8a at the event. However, the tech giant threw us a curveball last week by dropping the Pixel 8a on May 7, catching many fans off guard.

So, with the Pixel 8a out of the picture for Google I/O, what’s on the agenda? Well, rumour has it that Google has a few surprises up its sleeve, with artificial intelligence (AI) expected to steal the show.

AI is the talk of the town
With the rise in popularity of tools like ChatGPT and CoPilot, Google is going all-in on its investment in generative AI, particularly with its Gemini model. This powerhouse AI not only fuels Google’s own chatbot but also plays a role in features for devices like Samsung’s Galaxy series. As we gear up for the upcoming conference, there’s speculation about potential collaborations, perhaps even with Apple, to integrate Gemini into iOS functionalities.

Internally, Google seems to be making a shift from its traditional Assistant to the more advanced Gemini chatbot. This transition and its implications for Assistant-driven smart home gadgets are expected to be on the agenda at the conference. Additionally, there’s anticipation for announcements regarding deeper AI integration across Google’s product line, which could involve upgrades to Gemini and enhanced AI features for Pixel devices.

Apps get an AI makeover
When it comes to Google’s suite of productivity tools like Gmail, Docs, Sheets, and Slides, they’ve got some handy AI features in play already. Take “Help me write, organize, and visualize,” for instance—these tools streamline everyday tasks with ease. But what’s next? Well, last I/O, Google teased us with the side panel, which has been quietly undergoing testing lately.

But here’s the thing: while these features are great for productivity, I’m itching to see more AI magic in Gmail and Calendar that caters to personal use cases. I mean, who wouldn’t want a little AI assistance in managing their personal lives?

Now, let’s talk about Google Maps and Search. Remember the Search Generative Experience (SGE) announced a year ago? I’m curious if Google’s ready to take it out of the Labs preview program. It’s all about providing direct answers instead of making us sift through endless links. But let’s not forget the impact this could have on publishers—it’s a game-changer, to say the least.

And speaking of Google Maps, they’ve been tinkering with generative AI search to make finding places a breeze. Compared to web search, I find conversational search really shines in this space.

Last but not least, let’s not overlook Gemini, Google’s application and website. Sure, it’s got potential, but on mobile, it’s still a bit lacking compared to the trusty old Google Assistant. Here’s hoping upcoming updates will finally give Gemini the boost it needs to be a real contender in the world of phone assistants.

Android 15 sees the day of light
At Google I/O 2024, brace yourselves for a deep dive into Android 15, the next big release of the operating system. The first beta version has already hit the scene, but there’s more to come as we eagerly await further details at the event. Google I/O is renowned for unveiling user-friendly features, serving as a hub for developers and tech enthusiasts to dive into the latest innovations.

Early reports have hinted at exciting new additions like a universal dark mode, an improved interface for landscape use, and better notification handling. From the initial beta rollout, we’ve already seen some cool features in action, including partial screen sharing, a handy notification cooldown function, and expanded health-tracking capabilities.

Moreover, developers can look forward to new APIs that empower apps to optimize performance and provide users with detailed insights into app size. So, whether you’re a developer or simply a tech enthusiast, Google I/O promises to be a treasure trove of insights and innovations that will shape the future of Android.

Any new devices?
So, with the Pixel 8a already out in the open, does that mean Google I/O will be devoid of any new gadgets? Not quite Rumours swirling around suggest that there’s still a chance for some exciting hardware announcements at the event.

Word on the street is that we might get a sneak peek at the next generation of the Pixel Fold, which could potentially be rebranded as part of the Pixel 9 series. However, don’t hold your breath for a full-blown launch just yet. There’s also chatter about a Pixel Tablet 2 making its debut, but the recent release of a dockless version of the previous model might push back its arrival. While we might not see an official unveiling, a tantalizing teaser could very well be on the agenda.
