Elon Musk, the world’s richest man, has once again promised to make cars fly — this time on The Joe Rogan Experience.
Appearing on the latest episode of the podcast, the Tesla CEO claimed he hopes to unveil a flying car prototype before the end of the year.
The claim came when Rogan asked Musk about the much-delayed second-generation Tesla Roadster, first unveiled in 2017 and originally slated for a 2020 launch. The project, however, remains trapped in Musk’s familiar “next year” cycle.
“We’re getting close to,” Musk said, pausing before adding, “demonstrating the prototype. One thing I can guarantee is that this product demo will be unforgettable. Unforgettable.”
When Rogan pressed him on what would make it so memorable, Musk grinned and replied, “Whether it’s good or bad, it will be unforgettable.”
The exchange left Rogan stunned as Musk teased that the long-awaited Roadster could actually fly. He said the redesign was inspired partly by fellow billionaire Peter Thiel’s fascination with flying vehicles.
Tesla first showcased the next-generation Roadster in 2017, touting it as a record-breaking electric supercar capable of going from 0 to 60 mph in 1.9 seconds and covering 620 miles on a single charge. Production was initially scheduled for 2020 but has faced multiple delays — even as Tesla continued accepting deposits of up to $50,000.
Impact Shorts
More ShortsAs of 2025, the car still hasn’t reached the market. Yet Musk insists a demo event is “getting close” and could happen before the year ends.
During the nearly three-hour conversation, Musk also tried to pitch the Cybertruck before Rogan cut in to ask about the Roadster. “Oh, that’s coming,” Musk replied, adding, “We’re going to do something really special with that. It’s going to be the most memorable product unveil ever.”
This isn’t the first time Musk has hinted at a flying Roadster. Back in 2018, he teased a “SpaceX package” that would use cold-air thrusters — real rocket technology — to boost acceleration, improve handling, and possibly allow the car to hover for short bursts.
Independent analysts told the Daily Mail that Tesla is under growing pressure to deliver new, headline-grabbing products, as the Cybertruck — once expected to rival Ford’s F-150 — has fallen well short of sales expectations.
