OpenAI is on an upgrade roll, with the company launching its latest artificial intelligence model, as it tries to beat Google in the AI race. The tech giant brought out its GPT-5.2 Pro and GPT-5.2 Thinking, touting them as ChatGPT’s best models yet for handling math or science work.

In a blog post, OpenAI said, “Strong mathematical reasoning is a foundation for reliability in scientific and technical work. These capabilities are also closely tied to progress toward general intelligence.”

The new releases come as OpenAI CEO Sam Altman urges his team to get ahead of Google, the search engine that is pouring millions into developing its own AI model.

While Google can draw on its vast online ad revenue to fund AI development, OpenAI has been pouring tens of billions of dollars into computing infrastructure despite not yet turning a profit.

“We are confident we can continue to drive the revenue growth to meet,” Altman said in an interview with CNBC.

Without the infrastructure investments, “of course, we can’t drive the revenue growth, but we see way more reasons to be optimistic than reasons to be pessimistic,” he added.

In October, OpenAI launched a browser called ChatGPT Atlas to challenge Google Chrome. Dubbed as “one of the best features”, ChatGPT Atlas boasts of having a remarkable memory that makes the browser “more personalised and more helpful.” Another feature that OpenAI executives have raved about is the “agent mode”, which will initially be available to  ChatGPT Plus and Pro users.

Meanwhile, to tap into an even greater market, ChatGPT is expected to launch an “adult mode”, which OpenAI’s chief of applications, Fidji Simo, said will be released by the first quarter of 2026.

Tech industry rivals Amazon, Google, Meta, Microsoft and Elon Musk’s xAI have been pouring billions of dollars into artificial intelligence since the blockbuster launch of the first version of ChatGPT in late 2022.
