Apple seems to be gearing up for a bold move in its product lineup—a foldable iPad that’s rumoured to be twice the size of the iPad Pro. Reports suggest that this super-sized device could make its debut by 2028, marking a new chapter in Apple’s exploration of foldable technology.

While the company has long been speculated to have a foldable iPad in the works, this new device is said to be closer to the size of two iPad Pros placed side by side, effectively transforming into a MacBook-like device.

Blurring lines between iPad and MacBook

The foldable iPad is expected to feature a hinged OLED screen, which would enable users it to fold into a book-like form. When opened, it could function as a giant notebook, with the lower half of the display doubling as a virtual keyboard and trackpad, while the upper half serves as the main screen. Unlike traditional MacBooks, this device would likely run on a version of iPadOS, maintaining Apple’s stance against merging macOS and iPadOS into a single operating system.

Apple has reportedly filed patents for technology that could make this device stand out. These include a dual-screen setup with force-sensing and haptic feedback, which would allow the lower display to mimic a tactile keyboard or even transform into a large trackpad for creative tasks. Other innovations, like temporary raised keys using actuators, could add a more tactile experience for users who prefer physical feedback while typing.

Apple’s vision for portable devices

The super-sized foldable iPad could offer several use cases, from a spacious workspace for professionals on the go to a MacBook alternative that doesn’t require extra accessories like a Magic Keyboard. With an estimated 18.8-inch screen size, the device would rival the display area of a 13-inch MacBook while providing added flexibility through its foldable design.

Additionally, earlier rumours point to Apple also working on a smaller foldable iPad for a potential 2026 launch, possibly resembling the size of the iPad Mini. These smaller models might cater to users seeking a compact device that combines the portability of an iPhone with the screen real estate of an iPad.

Foldable patents aplenty

Apple’s plans for foldable devices aren’t entirely new. The company has been granted patents for designs incorporating hinged OLED screens and adaptable keyboard layouts. These concepts show Apple’s commitment to reimagining traditional form factors and making its devices more versatile. Whether it’s a foldable iPad that mimics a MacBook or a keyless keyboard with custom layouts, Apple seems intent on creating devices that adapt to users’ needs in real-time.

With rumours of a 2028 launch aligning with Apple’s recent display technology roadmap, it seems the foldable iPad isn’t just a wild idea—it’s a tangible product in the making. If the company can deliver on its promises, it could redefine the tablet and laptop market, much like it did with smartphones years ago.
