Apple could be gearing up to fix one of the most frustrating issues with its Magic Mouse, which has been around for 15 years. Reports suggest a new version of the mouse is in development and could arrive by 2026, finally addressing user complaints that have plagued the device since its debut.

While the Magic Mouse received a minor update in 2024 with a USB-C port and a shift from removable batteries to a built-in rechargeable one, it left one glaring issue unresolved—the awkward charging port placement on the bottom of the device. This design choice, which renders the mouse unusable while charging, has been a sticking point for many users.

STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD

A new design for the Magic Mouse

According to reports, Apple is currently prototyping a redesigned Magic Mouse, with the top priority being a new location for the charging port. There’s also speculation about potential ergonomic improvements, though details remain vague. This redesign aims to modernise the mouse for today’s computing needs, addressing complaints about its comfort and functionality that have lingered since its release in 2009.

Apple’s original Magic Mouse wasn’t well-received for its lack of ergonomics, and the 2015 redesign, which introduced an internal rechargeable battery, didn’t help matters. Charging from the bottom only added to user frustrations. Although Apple’s design team focused heavily on the mouse’s aesthetics and performance—down to fine-tuning the sound it made when gliding on surfaces—it seems the functional drawbacks were overlooked.

Magic Mouse’s design that divided people

The current Magic Mouse is lighter than its predecessor and features a continuous bottom shell with fewer moving parts. Its Multi-Touch surface is intuitive but doesn’t include Force Touch input, setting it apart from Apple’s Magic Trackpad or MacBooks. While its sleek design has its admirers, the unconventional charging method has been divisive. Some users find flipping the mouse for a quick charge a minor inconvenience, while others see it as a glaring oversight in usability.

Despite its quirks, the Magic Mouse has remained a staple of Apple’s peripheral lineup for over a decade. However, as computing needs evolve and ergonomic standards rise, the pressure is on Apple to deliver a more user-friendly design.

Apple to finally fix the issue?

If the rumours are accurate, Apple’s next Magic Mouse could finally resolve one of its most long-standing issues while possibly introducing new features to improve comfort and usability. However, it may be another year or two before the updated mouse sees the light of day.

With prototypes already in the works, this redesign could signal Apple’s intent to bring its peripherals in line with modern expectations. For long-time Magic Mouse users, 2026 might just be the year they get a mouse that’s not only beautiful but also practical.
