Surrogacy Bill 2019 disempowers women, supersedes more pressing legislation on artificial reproductive technology
Gita Aravamudan • 6 years agoIt is obvious to anyone acquainted with fertility treatment that it is the whole process of Artificial Reproductive Technology (ART) which has to be regulated. Surrogacy is just one small aspect of it. Passing such a Bill before passing the ART Bill (which has been in cold storage for more than a decade) is meaningless.

Gita Aravamudan • 6 years agoThe womb is a very personal space for a woman, and if she wishes to use it for surrogacy, it is her prerogative to do so. The only role the State has to play is to ensure she is not exploited by unscrupulous elements, and this can be done by recognising surrogacy as legitimate work

Amid the din, Health Minister JP Nadda introduced the surrogacy bill, after which TMC's Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar spoke on the matter, saying "fashion surrogacy" must be stopped and calling for a public debate on the bill.
