The Australian Open gets underway on Monday with Nadal, the 2009 champion, looking to edge ahead of Roger Federer, who also has 20 Slam titles to his name.
The eight top-ranked players in the world gather in London for the ATP Tour Finals where Nadal's world number one ranking will be under threat from Djokovic.
Nadal, who has never won the title at Bercy or the Tour Finals, also withdrew from the Paris Masters on his last appearance in 2017 and missed last year's tournament with another abdominal injury
