Coming down heavily on pesky callers, telecom regulator Trai today said it has penalised some service providers, but has given banks time till mid-December to check unsolicited commercial calls and SMSs.

To tighten the noose further, TRAI has also put some of the onus of pesky calls on the access provider. It has said if any unsolicited commercial communication has been sent by a subscriber who is not registered with it as telemarketer, the originating access provider of such subscriber shall be liable to pay up to Rs 5,000 for every such complaint.<br /><br />

DoT also feels that that government should increase penalty for unauthorised or illegal phone interception to Rs 2 crore from Rs 1 core charged at present.

In a bid to combat the menace of pesky calls and SMSes, sectoral regulator Trai has decided that telecom facilities given to subscriber would be immediately disconnected if it is found being used for sending unsolicited communication.
