Preview Zimbabwe hope their World Cup campaign and the international career of Brendan Taylor end on a happy note in their last Pool B match against India in Auckland on Saturday. The Africans started with an impressive performance against South Africa in Hamilton, losing by 62 runs before beating the United Arab Emirates. But they then collided with record-shattering Chris Gayle in the West Indies match and a revived Pakistan as their hopes of reaching the last eight dwindled. [caption id=“attachment_2152915” align=“alignleft” width=“380”] Virat Kohli. AFP[/caption] Their five-run defeat against Ireland in Hobart ended any outside chance for them to sneak into the next stage. Taylor, who deputised as skipper for injured Elton Chigumbura, hit a fighting hundred which was in vain as a controversial catch by John Mooney to dismiss Sean Williams sealed their fate. Wicketkeeper/batsman Taylor will be playing his last international match after signing a three-year deal with Nottinghamshire. Taylor could still lead the team on Saturday in case Chigumbura fails to recover in time from a tear to the quadriceps muscle in his left leg. Taylor believes his team have the capacity to beat defending champions India who have already reached the quarter-finals. “Well, it’s another opportunity to try and get all three departments right, and if we do that, there’s no reason why we can’t beat India,” said Taylor. “We’ve beaten them before back home, so we have that belief we can do it. “Yes, they’re one of the best teams in the world playing on a pretty small ground in Auckland, but it’s a great opportunity for us to be in the World Cup and showcase our talent and skills against the best in the world. “There’s a lot to play for, a lot of pride at stake. We want to try to finish on a high note.” But it’s easier said than done as the defending champions have won all their five matches to march into the quarter-finals as the top team in Pool B. Despite the match bearing no significance for India, skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni promises the same intensity. “We’re highly motivated, in this game also. If it comes to the points, we have qualified for the next stage, but still, it was a challenge in itself,” said Dhoni after a comprehensive eight-wicket win over Ireland. “The next game will be the last before we get into the knockout stages, so we’ll keep improving every game. That’s our motive so that we can maintain the forward shift that we have got.” Asked if India could try its bench strength before the knock-out stage, Dhoni replied: “We will have to take input from the physio because the situation demands some rest (for players) but if there are no injury concerns then we want to put the best eleven on the ground.” India are likely to face Asian neighbours Bangladesh in the quarter-finals in Melbourne on March 19. World Cup, India vs Zimbabwe as it happened: India beat Zim by 6 wickets
Live updates as India take on Zimbabwe in their last Pool B match.
)
India have won 6 out of 6. They have been the best team in the group stages and could win this whole shebang.
That’s it from us. Thanks for following our coverage.
Over 48: India 279/4 (Raina 109, Dhoni 77)
Eight from the over without a boundary. Just nine to get now. Will Dhoni take it to the last over or not?
Over 47: India 271/4 (Raina 107, Dhoni 73)
Nothing going Zimbabwe’s way. Raina chips the ball to long-off and the ball just carried to the diving fielder running in but he couldn’t get his hands under it. Dhoni rubs it in by leaning back and smashing Mupariwa over long-off for SIX! The bowler tries to go full but is too full and Dhoni deflects the full toss to the fine leg boundary. 15 from the over. Just 17 to get now from 18 balls.
Over 46: India 256/4 (Raina 106, Dhoni 59)
Chatara again strays down leg and Raina helps the ball to the fine leg boundary. Chatara looks distraught. Zimbabwe self destructing under pressure. Dhoni and Raina attempt a suicidal single off the last ball and if the ball had hit the stumps, Raina could have kept running. The fielder misses and there is nobody at the stumps to gather the ball at the keeper’s end.
Over 45: India 249/4 (Raina 101, Dhoni 56)
This is Raina’s first World Cup hundred. It has come at a crucial time for his team. India need 39 from 30 to win this.
Over 44: India 240/4 (Raina 95, Dhoni 55)
Raina dabs Chatara past short third man for four more. Moves into the 90s too.. The boundary done, Dhoni and Raina take singles until Chatara serves up a chest high full toss that Dhoni swats to fine leg even as he takes evasive action. Another good over for India – 13 from it.
Zimbabwe cracking under the pressure.
Over 43: India 227/4 (Raina 89, Dhoni 50)
Raina plays the delicate-est of delicate late cuts and gets four. A single to long-off gets Dhoni to his FIFTY. A smart, calculating knock. Even an inside edge from Raina fetches two runs as Dhoni charges back for the second the fielder mucks up the throw. Ten from the over.
Over 42: India 217/4 (Raina 82, Dhoni 48)
Raina slams Masakadza through the covers and then lands on right on the rope at cow corner for SIX! 13 from the over.
Just 71 to get now.
Over 41: India 204/4 (Raina 71, Dhoni 46)
Raza is back but slides down leg and Dhoni hammers it to the fine leg boundary. Raina flirts outside off and misses two consecutive balls before dabbing the ball into the offside and stealing a single. Dhoni does likewise on the legside. Seven from the over.
Over 40: India 197/4 (Raina 70, Dhoni 40)
Panyangara ambles up and bowls a slow bouncer – 122 kph – and Raina hammers it into the crowd for SIX! A couple of singles brings up the 100 partnership from 103 balls. It is the 9th century partnership between these two from 66 innings. That’s a lot for Nos 5 and 6.
Thirteen from the over in all and 39 from the PowerPlay. India will take that. They have 91 more runs to get from 10 overs, which is doable without much risk on such a small ground.
Over 39: India 184/4 (Raina 62, Dhoni 36)
Mupariwa just ambling up and putting the ball on the spot. No pace for the batsmen to work with. Dhoni can’t get the first four deliveries away. Just pushes them into the offside. A short delivery is then pulled to square leg but the fielder in the deep keeps Dhoni to one. A single to Raina means just two runs come from the over. Excellent work by Mupariwa.
Over 38: India 182/4 (Raina 61, Dhoni 35)
Dhoni dabs the ball behind point and the point fielder deflected the ball past the short third man fielder and Dhoni gets four. Chatara bowls a terrible slower bouncer down legside and Raina helps it on its way to the fine leg boundary. Two from the final delivery make it 12 from the over. Just what India need.
Over 37: India 170/4 (Raina 55, Dhoni 30)
Panyangara is brought back into the attack and Raina smashes him on the up past mid-off to bring up his FIFTY. Shakes his bat at the dressing room. He is lucky to still be there, though. Still, only seven from the over.
Over 36: India 163/4 (Raina 49, Dhoni 30)
Mupariwa taking the pace off the ball. Raina tries to run himself out by haring down the pitch after Dhoni misses a straight ball. Dhoni isn’t even looking at him and Raina is half way down the pitch before he puts on the breaks. Dives full length to get home, then drops the bat and the gloves and takes a walk while he rubs his elbow.
Dhoni rescues the over by cutting the last ball between point and short third man for four. Still, only five from it. The required-rate is almost at 9.
Over 35: India 158/4 (Raina 48, Dhoni 26)
Raza continues and continues attacking legstump. Mostly singles accrue.
DROPPED! Raina goes for the sweep off the last ball and gets the top edge that Zimbabwe have been looking for but Masakadza at square leg drops a sitter. Raza stares at him with disbelief. Zimbabwe had worked so hard to create that opportunity. It could cost them the match.
Over 34: India 151/4 (Raina 44, Dhoni 24)
Masakadza starts bowling cross-seam. Just two from his first over. Doesn’t give either batsmen any width.
Over 33: India 149/4 (Raina 44, Dhoni 23)
Raza offers Dhoni a legside full toss and Dhoni accepts the gift with glee. Swats it to deep square leg for four. Eight from the over.
Over 32: India 142/4 (Raina 41, Dhoni 17)
Mire decides to bounce Dhoni, who whacks him behind square for four. Wasn’t a bad bouncer, was a really good shot. Mire then provides width outside off and Dhoni cuts him to the point boundary. Another good over – 11 from it.
Over 31: India 130/4 (Raina 40, Dhoni 8)
Raza continues attacking that legstump with Dhoni on strike. Zimbabwe’s fielders also throwing themselves around to prevent singles in the circle. Just three from the over – all singles.
