World Athletics Championships 2025 Highlights: Defending champion Neeraj Chopra has been eliminated in Tokyo, finishing in 8th place after five rounds, Olympic champion Arshad Nadeem has also been knocked out, finishing 10th. Sachin Yadav finished fourth thanks to his first-round throw of 86.27m.

World Athletics Championships 2025 Highlights: The men’s javelin throw final on Thursday (18 September) at the National Stadium in Tokyo saw a thrilling competition, but India’s Neeraj Chopra and Pakistan’s Arshad Nadeem could not reach the podium. Keshorn Walcott of Trinidad and Tobago won the gold with a season-best 88.16m, followed by Grenada’s Anderson Peters (87.38m) and USA’s Curtis Thompson (86.67m) claiming silver and bronze, respectively. India’s Sachin Yadav impressed with a personal best of 86.27m, finishing fourth, while Olympic champion Neeraj Chopra ended in eighth with 84.03m. Arshad Nadeem, who had won gold at the Paris 2024 Olympics, finished tenth with 82.75m. Germany’s Julian Weber secured fifth place with 86.11m.

This will be the first time Neeraj will be facing off against Nadeem since the Paris Olympics 2024, where the Pakistani athlete won the gold with a  92.97m throw. Neeraj clinched the silver with a 89.45m throw.

The 27-year-old Neeraj had won the World Championships gold with an 88.17m throw in Budapest in 2023. He is the first Indian to win a gold medal in the World Athletics Championships. He had also won silver in 2022.

Neeraj faces stiff comeptition from Nadeem and Weber

Neeraj will not only be facing competition from Nadeem, as Weber is also part of the final. The world No 1, Weber, recently won the Diamond League final with a season-leading 91.51m, while Neeraj won the silver in Zurich with a best of 85.01m.

Nadeem was not a part of the Diamond League as he has been suffering from injury issues. Since becoming the Olympic champion, he has only taken part in the Asian Athletics Championships earlier this year, where he won gold with a throw of 86.40m.

India’s Sachin Yadav won the silver medal at the Asian Athletics Championships with a throw of 85.16m, and he will also be a part of the final on Thursday. Sachin qualified for the final with a best throw of 83.67m.
