It was only less than two months ago when Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) CEO Dana White had confirmed that Jon Jones would take on Tom Aspinall for the unified heavyweight championship title later this year. However, there’s uncertainty surrounding the fight and there were rumours going around that Jones had demanded for more money than usual, reportedly $30 million, which eventually halted negotiations for a fight against Tom Aspinall.
In November 2024, Jon Jones, who is nicknamed “Bones, defended his UFC heavyweight championship title after he defeated Stephen Miocic in UFC 309. White said that there’s a “100 per cent” chance of Jones being stripped of the heavyweight title if he did not gear up to fight Aspinall by the middle of 2025.
‘We move on and we make another fight’: Dana White
“100%. Listen, if we don’t get the fight done, we move on and we make another fight. But, the night before, I was up in my room with my people till like, six in the morning. We’re working on lots of stuff right now. There’s lots of really good sh*t going on right now,” he told during an interview with The MacLife on their YouTube channel. “There’s no situation. It’s the biggest fight we can make,” he added.
White also admitted that Jon Jones fears no one and is ready to fight irrespective of the opponent. “I know the fans like to mess with Jon or whatever. Jon Jones isn’t afraid of anybody, and Jon Jones will fight anybody. It’s just a matter of getting the fight done now. That’s our job,” he said.
UFC commentator Joe Rogan, however, believes that the rumour of Jones asking for more money was “fake”. “I heard a rumor that Jon Jones wanted $30 million to fight Tom Aspinall. And I did hear that rumor. And I did hear the UFC said yes but it’s not true. Dana contacted me and said, ‘That rumor is bullsh*t.’ So I felt obligated to tell everybody - that was a fake rumor,” he told on an episode of the Joe Rogan Experience programme.
Tom Aspinall, on the other hand, is the interim heavyweight champion and he defeated Curtis Blaydes in the Co-main heavyweight clash of UFC 304 in July last year.
