It was a very emotional day for cousins Valentin Vacherot and Arthur Rinderknech as both cried after playing each other in the Shanghai Masters final on Sunday, October 12. World No. 204 Vacherot, who came through the qualifiers, made history by beating his cousin and World No. 54 Rinderknech 4-6, 6-3, 6-3 to win the title.
Vacherot became the lowest-ranked player ever to win a Masters 1000 event and also the first player from Monaco to win a tour-level singles title in the Open Era. He had qualified for the final after defeating 24-time Grand Slam winner Novak Djokovic on Saturday, while Rinderknech had beaten Daniil Medvedev to reach the summit clash.
Cousins share an emotional moment at Shanghai Masters final
The 26-year-old could not believe his victory at this level as he covered his face after hitting the winning shot and later hugged his cousin at the net. He even broke down in tears as his cousin gave an emotional speech at the trophy presentation. Both players were seen crying during the ceremony.
“To Valentin, who I love. Two cousins who gave everything. I’m so happy for you. We’ll spend the rest of our lives talking about this week,” Rinderknech was quoted as saying by one of the commentators. He also gave a shoutout to his coach Lucas Pouille and his family.

Vacherot, in his speech, thanked Rinderknech, saying, “Big thanks to Arthur, I went to Texas A&M with you. I want to thank you. You helped me to live over there. It took me a while to follow you into the top 100 but now we’ll be together, hopefully we can both stay there, thanks for everything. I couldn’t have dreamed of a better final.”
