'I don’t identify with either': Rafael Nadal's honest take on Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner

Rafael Nadal has made it clear that he does not see himself in either Carlos Alcaraz or Jannik Sinner, even though both players are often compared to him as the new faces of men’s tennis. Speaking in a recent interview, the 22-time Grand Slam champion explained how different the two young stars are from each other and from the way he played during his career.

Nadal said that Alcaraz and Sinner have very different styles. According to him, Alcaraz is more unpredictable and plays with a lot of freedom. The Spaniard feels that his compatriot does not always follow a fixed pattern, which leads to some errors but also produces spectacular shots that excite fans. On the other hand, Nadal described Sinner as a much more methodical player, who follows a clear game plan and keeps improving step by step, making him more consistent.

“I don’t identify with either. They’re different players from what I was. I think Carlos is more random. He makes more errors, hits more spectacular shots, sometimes doesn’t such a defined game pattern, which makes him unpredictable and fun for spectators. Jannik is more methodical, focused, with a more defined pattern, and he keeps adding things little by little. That’s why he’s so solid and loses very few matches,” Nadal told AS in an interview.

Nadal praises Alcaraz

The former world No.1 also said he finds it amusing when people describe Alcaraz as a “scattered” player. Nadal pointed out that despite looking random at times, Alcaraz has had an excellent year with strong results in all major tournaments. Alcaraz reached the quarterfinal of the Australian Open, and competed in the finals of the French Open, Wimbledon, and the US Open, taking two titles and clinching the year-end No. 1 ranking for the second time.

“Sometimes Carlos seems more scattered, but when you look at the results, he’s had an incredibly consistent and solid year in all the big tournaments. That’s why it makes me laugh when I hear that he’s scattered. The results say the opposite. That’s my view,” Nadal, who played the men’s doubles at the 2024 Paris Olympics with Alcaraz, said.
