Novak Djokovic is facing criticism from fans and tennis experts after pulling out of the ATP Finals just days before the tournament. The former world No. 1 announced his withdrawal on Instagram, saying he is struggling with an ongoing injury that will prevent him from competing in Turin.

Djokovic recently made history by becoming the oldest man to win an ATP Tour event after his victory at the Athens Open, where he finally secured his 101st title. However, his decision to withdraw from the ATP Finals soon after lifting the trophy has raised several questions.

“I was really looking forward to competing in Turin and giving my best, but after today’s final in Athens, I’m sad to share that I need to withdraw due to an ongoing injury. I’m truly sorry to the fans who were hoping to see me play. I wish all the players an amazing tournament, and I can’t wait to be back on the court with you all soon,” Djokovic said.

Despite his emotional message, many believe the Serbian star should have made the decision earlier. His late withdrawal has caused confusion among players and organisers. Because of his withdrawal, both Felix Auger-Aliassime and Lorenzo Musetti got a place in the season-ending tournament in Turin.

If Djokovic had decided to play in the ATP Finals, then Musetti would not have qualified, unless he had won the Athens title to earn enough ranking points to move ahead of Auger-Aliassime. But if Djokovic had pulled out earlier, before the Athens tournament started, Musetti would have automatically qualified for Turin without needing to play in Greece at all.

Fans slam Djokovic

This is not the first time Djokovic has withdrawn from the season-ending event due to injury, and many fans feel his timing this year was disrespectful to the rest of the field. Fans also slammed Djokovic for choosing to play in Athens instead of the prestigious ATP Finals, accusing him of being afraid to face Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz.
