Gael Monfils withdrew from the French Open on Wednesday with a wrist injury, handing second round opponent Holger Rune a free pass into the last 32.
“I have a problem with my wrist that I can’t overcome,” the 36-year-old Monfils told reporters.
“I had tests and the doctor said it was not good to play and that I should stop.”

The French crowd-pleaser, who has slumped to 394 in the world rankings after battling a crippling foot injury, defeated Sebastian Baez of Argentina 3-6, 6-3, 7-5, 1-6, 7-5 in a first round tie which ended in the early moments of Wednesday morning.
A semi-finalist at Roland Garros back in 2008, Monfils came back from 0-4, 30-40 in the decider to stun an opponent 14 years his junior and ranked at 42.
However, he had cramped badly in the fifth set and was hardly able to walk.
