Tennis star Aryna Sabalenka has weighed in on the transgender athlete debate by stating that it would be “unfair” for women to face “biological men” in her sport. The four-time Grand Slam champions’ comment comes at a time when the participation of trans athletes in the women’s game is being debated across a wide variety of sports, with some governing bodies such as World Aquatics and World Athletics banning them outright from women’s events.

And when the topic was brought up during Sabalenka and fellow tennis star Nick Kyrgios’ appearance on the latest episode of Piers Morgan Uncensored, the Belarusian insisted that she had nothing against trans athletes, but maintained that they had a “huge advantage” over women.

“That’s a tricky question. I have nothing against them,” Sabalenka told the eminent British television presenter. “But I feel like they still got a huge advantage over the women, and I think it’s not fair on women to face basically biological men.”

“It’s not fair. The woman has been working her whole life to reach her limit, and then she has to face a man who is biologically much stronger, so for me, I don’t agree with this kind of stuff in sport,” she added.

The world’s number one in women's tennis Aryna Sabalenka gives Piers Morgan her view on professional trans players.

Kyrgios agrees with Sabalenka’s stance

Australia’s Kyrgios, who faces the women’s No 1 in a ‘Battle of the Sexes’ clash on 28 December, agreed with Sabalenka’s view. “I think she hit the nail on the head,” said the former Wimbledon finalist.

Some tennis bodies too have taken action against the participation of trans athletes in the women’s division, with Britain’s Lawn Tennis Association updating its rules last year to ban transgender competitors from national and inter-club female events.

Women’s tennis has not had a transgender athlete in the professional circuit in recent years. USA’s Renee Richards, who had played on the women’s professional tour from 1977 to 1981 and would go on to coach 18-time Grand Slam champion Martina Navratilova, was the last such case in the sport.

The WTA Tour currently allows trans athletes to compete alongside women so long as they’ve declared their gender as ‘female’ for a minimum period of four years and have also lowered testosterone levels and agreed to testing procedures. The aforementioned conditions, however, could be varied by a medical manager appointed by the women’s tour.

The WTA, meanwhile, is yet to respond to Sabalenka’s comment.
