Day Three Report Galle: India reached 23/1 in pursuit of 176 runs after they bowled out Sri Lanka for 367 runs in their second innings despite Dinesh Chandimal’s unbeaten 162 on the third day of the first Test at the Galle International Stadium here on Friday. After conceding a 192-run first innings lead, the Sri Lankan top order failed to rise to the occasion. But young Chandimal registered his fourth century in Test cricket to bail the team out of trouble. Chandimal hit 19 fours and four sixes from 169 deliveries. AP[/caption] The right-hander forged a 125-run stand with Lahiru Thirimanne (44) when the hosts were 92/5 and it helped them overcome the innings deficit. Chandimal was also involved with another healthy partnership of 82 runs with Jehan Mubarak (49) for the sixth wicket to ensure that the Sri Lankans get a 100-run lead. Indian off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin (4-114) completed a 10-wicket haul in the match and he was ably supported by leg-spinner Amit Mishra (3-61). Veteran off-spinner Harbhajan Singh, Ishant Sharma and Varun Aaron bagged a wicket each. At the end of the day, India lost Lokesh Rahul (5) to Rangana Herath. Shikhar Dhawan (not out 13) and nightwatchman Ishant (5 not out) were at the crease as India look in command to get another 153 runs to take a 1-0 lead in the three-match series. Earlier, starting the day at five for two, Sri Lanka lost Dhammika Prasad (3) to the first ball of the day as the nightwatchman failed to fend off a well directed bouncer from pacer Aaron and edged to Ajinkya Rahane at gully. Skipper Angelo Mathews (39) joined former captain Kumar Sangakkara (40), who is playing in his penultimate international match. The left-right combination showed some resilience even though the Indian bowlers kept troubling them. They forged a 87-run stand for the fourth wicket to bring the deficit down to 100 runs. However, left-hander Sangakkara nudged an Ashwin delivery that took a sharp turn away from him only to see a diving Rahane pouch a brilliant catch at slip in the 25th over. Sangakkara, considered one of the greatest batsmen, walked back to a standing ovation from the Galle crowd. In the very next over, Mathews fell to a bouncing ball from leg-spinner Mishra. Mathews played the ball on to his pads and it went to Lokesh Rahul at silly point. With the skipper’s wicket, Sri Lanka reeled at 95/5 when young batsmen Chandimal and Thirimanne joined hands. Starting the second session at 108 for five and his team still trailing by 84 runs, unbeaten Chandimal felt that attack was the best mode of defence and showed his intentions early. Ashwin picked his third wicket of the innings as left-hander Thirimanne edged one to Rahane at slip. It was Tamil Nadu’s Ashwin’s ninth wicket of the five-day match. Chandimal was joined by Mubarak and they were going strong till Harbhajan induced an edge off the latter that was caught at slip by Rahane to reduce the hosts to 302/7. Mishra removed Herath as the batsman edged it to slip fielder Rahane, who created a world record by taking eight catches in a single Test match. Ishant accounted for Tharindu Kaushal (7) while Ashwin rattled the stumps of 11th man Nuwan Pradeep (3) as Sri Lanka were bowled out for 367, leaving India 176 runs to win the match. Virat Kohli-captained India reached 23/1 with only the loss of Rahul, who was trapped in front of the stumps by left-arm spinner Herath. IANS

So, that’s it from us here at Firstpost after what has been a riveting Test match. There will be lots said and discussed about this performance but for now congratulations, Sri Lanka.
Join us for the second Test starting Thursday. And hang around for post-match reports and analysis.

in Aug'97 at Colombo - SL made a record 952/6d
in Aug'15 at Galle - SL won #IndvSL
Angelo Mathews, Sri Lanka captain:
What a turnaround. I’m speechless. A poor batting performance in the first innings. but we came back. Chandimal was outstanding, he single-handedly got us to a fighting score.
Virat Kohli, the losing captain:
We have got no one to blame but us. We should have dominated the match after taking 5 wickets in the first session yesterday. Herath bowled really well. One bad session turned the match around completely.
Dinesh Chandimal undoubtedly the Man of the Match:
It was not an easy wicket to bat on. I just tried to sweep and reverse-sweep. Thought 175-plus might be a good total
The defining phase of the match. One that will be remembered for a long, long time.
There is much to be said in favour of playing fearlessly #Chandimal. It is also very difficult as many have learnt!

A lot will be said and dissected in the next few days about India’s woeful batting – their 112 is the lowest against Sri Lanka. Herath turned back the years after getting dropped against Pakistan. It wil be very interesting to hear what Kohli and Shastri have to say after this.
Post-match presentation underway..
Nothing should take away what has a been brilliant, brilliant effort from Sri Lanka.
There's a lot to be critical about India's performance but save that for later. For the moment let's hail a stupendous victory by Sri Lanka

Aakash trying to sober things a bit. And he has a point.
Youth is often promising and unpredictable at the same time...be patient with this young Indian Test team #SLvIND

One of the many records that have been set today..
Only the 7th time in cricket history a side has lost a Test after leading by 190+ runs on 1st innings! (excl forfeitures)#SLvsIND #IndvsSL

Well said.

He's made quite a name for himself.
ALL OUT! That’s it! A famous win for Sri Lanka in Galle as Mishra falls to Kaushal – trying to step down but gets an edge that loops up and taken running behind by silly-point. (Third umpire dampens the mood a bit by checking some 4 diferent angles to check no-ball but its fine)
WHAT. A. TURNAROUND.
After 49 overs India 112-9 (Mishra 15, Aaron 1)
Another lofted cover drive from Mishra against Herath, fetches him the third boundary of his brief innings. Aaron took a first ball single but gets to be on strike next over.
Rangana Herath currently has the best figures by a left-arm spinner vs India.Hedley Verity had 7/49 at Chennai (then Madras) in 1934#INDvSL
— Rajneesh Gupta (@rgcricket) August 15, 2015
After 48 overs India 106-9 (Mishra 10, Aaron 0)
Mishra continues to defend well against the full balls and goes aerial off the last ball to pick up a boundary. Good looking lofted off-drive, but Aaron gets to face Herath.
I’m willing to bet that’s not what is actually going through Aakash Chopra’s head..
Who would've thought? Well, I didn't. Got to love this game. Great game this cricket. Well played, Sri Lanka 🙏

After 46 overs India 102-8 (Rahane 36, Mishra 6)
Mishra taking the attack to Kaushal, stepping down the track to clear mid-off for a four. Nervously plays out the rest of the over.
After 45 overs India 98-8 (Rahane 36, Mishra 2)
Yet another first ball single for Rahane but that almost backfired. Second ball from Herath was dragged back a little bit and it turned and bounced to take the outside edge but soft hands meant it fell short of Mathews at slip. Follows that up with a nervous hoick coming down the ground but it lands safe. Rahane pinned on strike for the rest of the over.
After 44 overs India 96-8 (Rahane 35, Mishra 1)
Rahane takes a leaf out of Chandimal’s book – reverse sweeps Kaushal for four through point. Brings out the traditional sweep to take a single and Mishra defends the last three balls – the last one from around the wicket by Kaushal.
After 43 overs India 91-8 (Rahane 30, Mishra 1)
Another early single for Rahane, Mishra solidly defends on the front foot for four balls.
After 42 overs India 90-8 (Rahane 29, Mishra 1)
Kaushal gets a go at Mishra but he takes the single off the first ball. Rahane, perhaps surprisingly, takes a single off the third ball – showing trust in Mishra’s batting. Last ball saw a loud appeal (the 134th of this morning) as silly-point caught it low. No bat, says umpire and rightly so. Good decision.
After 41 overs India 88-8 (Rahane 28, Mishra 0)
Maiden over from Herath. Rahane cannot get off strike as the last ball was greeted with a loud cheer from the crowd – brings Mishra on strike to Kaushal.
After 40 overs India 88-8 (Rahane 28, Mishra 0)
Rahane shows some aggression, sweeping Kaushal for a four through square leg, piercing two deep fielders. Tucks a couple behind square as Mathews brings in a leg slip. Gives Mishra just one ball to face, keeps strike.
After 39 overs India 81-8 (Rahane 21)
That over saw Herath test Ashwin’s defence with tossed up balls that were not there to be defended from the crease and forcing Ashwin to try something different. The idea was to break the shackles but Ashwin will be disappointed with that.
After 37 overs India 80-7 (Rahane 20, Ashwin 3)
Kaushal sticks to over the wicket . Rahane takes a single off the first ball. Ashwin playing forward with huge strides and bat in front of pads. Couple of balls turn past the leg stump as Kaushal missed his line a bit in that over.
After 36 overs India 79-7 (Rahane 19, Ashwin 3)
Herath continues to toss it up on the stumps from around the wicket. Just a single for Rahane to start the second session as he works one off his pads to midwicket. SL continue with an in-out field.
Kaushal from the other end.
Its a case of India’s worst nightmares coming true in Galle this morning. Sri Lanka need 3 more wickets, 98 runs behind.
Herath to start proceedings..
Mayhem in Galle: 55 runs and 6 wickets from 28 overs in the session. Painfully slow stuff from India this morning and they have dug themselves into a deep hole. Kaushal and Herath have been sensational with the ball but the catching has been even better. Kushal Silva has taken some blinders at short-leg.
Join us for the second session in 30 mins.
India 78-7 after 36 overs (Rahane 18, Ashwin 3)
Just one run from that over as Kaushal finishes the session with a tight over. Just two runs in that over.
LUNCH in Galle.
And never a chase more than 99 in Galle. All doom and gloom for India as of now..
Only once have India lost a Test when chasing a target of less than 180: http://t.co/xixu2ClfvB Looks like a 2nd one coming up
— S Rajesh (@rajeshstats) August 15, 2015
India 76-7 after 35 overs (Rahane 17, Ashwin 3)
Rahane treats Kaushal’s off-spinners with great respect after that scare in the previous over. Staying nice and low. Ashwin is showing intent by stepping down to meet the ball on the pitch and with long strides forward. Rahane cuts Herath hard for a much-needed boundary to bring the target down to 100 more.
Kaushal with the last over before lunch
A test that India have failed in miserably this morning so far…
4th innings runs are as much a test of character as of ability.
— Harsha Bhogle (@bhogleharsha) August 15, 2015
Not sure if it matters in the bigger picture, top-order’s collective failure the problem.
Bad move to send Harbhajan ahead of Ashwin. #INDvSL
