Paralympics 2024 medals tally: India end historic campaign with 29 medals including seven gold

India’s Paris Paralympics medal tally: India’s stellar campaign in Paris thus concluded with 29 medals — 7 gold, 9 silver and 13 bronze, their biggest haul in a single edition of the event including in terms of the number of gold medals won.

India won 29 medals at Paralympics 2024, their best-ever performance. Reuters

India’s campaign in the Paralympic Games in Paris came to an end on Sunday afternoon, the final day of the event, with Pooja Ojha bowing out of the women’s kayak single 200m KL1 in the semi-finals.

Pooja finished fourth in Semi-Final 1 of the event to 1:17.23, failing to reach the final as a result. Only the top three from the two semi-final groups qualified for Final A of the event.

India’s stellar campaign in Paris thus concluded with 29 medals — 7 gold, 9 silver and 13 bronze. Not only is the the most medals India has ever won in the Paralympics, the 84-strong Indian contingent also set a new record for the most gold medals won in a single edition.

Both records had been set in the Tokyo Paralympics three years ago, where India had won 5 gold, 8 silver and 6 bronze.

While there were no medals for India on the opening day, shooters Avani Lekhara and Mona Agarwal opened India’s account at the Paris Games after winning gold and bronze respectively in the women’s 10m air rifle standing SH1 event on Friday.

Sprinter Preethi Pal and shooter Manish Narwal would add to India’s medal tally on the same day, winning women’s 100m T35 bronze and men’s 10m air pistol SH1 silver respectively.

Over the course of the tournament, javelin star Sumit Antil would successfully retain his men’s javelin throw F64 crown by smashing his own Paralympic record that he had set three years ago.

Later Harvinder Singh would win the country’s first ever gold medal in archery at the Paralympics, three years after winning its maiden medal in the sport with a bronze.

The Paris Games also witnessed Preethi, who had become the first Indian to win a track medal at the Paralympics with a 100m bronze, win a medal of the same colour in the 200m event as well.

Para-athletics also witnessed Dharambir and Pranav Soorma win gold and silver respectively in the men’s club throw F51 category to complete a maiden one-two finish for India in an event at the Paralympics.

There were other firsts as well, such as Kapil Parmar winning the country’s first ever Paralympic medal in judo by winning bronze in the men’s 60kg J1 category.

Simran Sharma (women’s 200m T12) and Navdeep (men’s javelin throw F41) would win India’s 28th and 29th medals respectively on Saturday, the penultimate day of competitions.
