Indian javelin throwers continued to shine at the Paralympic Games in Paris with Navdeep Singh winning gold in the men’s javelin throw F41 category on Saturday.

Navdeep had initially won silver in the event as Iran’s Sadegh Beit Sayah eclipsing the Indian’s best effort of 47.32 metres with a throw of 47.64m in his penultimate attempt to take home the gold.

Sayah, however, was later disqualified from the event, resulting in Navdeep’s silver getting upgraded to gold. China’s Sun Pengxiang had initially won bronze with a best effort of 44.72m, and was later upgraded to silver with Iraq’s Wildan Nukhailawi winning bronze with a best effort of 40.46m.

Navdeep’s gold took India’s medal tally at the Paris Games to 29 — 10 more than what the national contingent had managed in Tokyo three years ago in what was their previous best haul.

Sayah’s disqualification also means the Paralympic record goes back to Navdeep after the Indian held on to it briefly during the final.

It was also India’s seventh gold in the Games, two more than what they had managed in Tokyo, which was also their biggest gold medal haul in a single edition of the Paralympics.

It came immediately after para-sprinter Simran Sharma won bronze in the women’s 200m T12 event, making up for her heartbreak in the 100-metre event in the same category earlier this week.
