Indian javelin throwers Ajeet Singh and Sundar Singh Gurjar won silver and bronze medals in the T46 final at the 2024 Paris Paralympics on Tuesday. Ajeet finished with a best throw of 65.62m, whereas Sundar threw a distance of 64.96, which were their personal best and season best respectively.

The duo’s medals, combined with the silver and bronze medals of Sharad Kumar and Mariyappan Thangavelu in men’s high jump T63 took India’s medal tally to 20 (Three gold, seven silver and 10 bronze). This is India’s best-ever display at an edition of the Paralympics, with the nation surpassing 19 medals that were won in Tokyo three years back.
Guillermo Varona Gonzalez of Cuba won gold. Rinku, who was the third Indian in the competition, finished in fifth place with a throw of 61.58m.
At around the same time, Sharad Kumar, Mariyappan Thangavelu and Shailesh Kumar were participating in the men’s high jump T63 event. Shailesh Kumar, however, endured a disappointing fourth place finish.
The collective effort of javelin throwers and high jumpers took India’s tally to 20 medals in the medal standings. India have now won three gold, seven silver and 10 bronze and are in 17th place in the overall standings. This is India’s best-ever show at the Paralympics, beating their previous tally of 19 in Tokyo.
In the javelin throw final, Ajeet began with a throw of 59.30m, and his third attempt was even better with a throw of 62.33m. He kept his best for the last, in the fifth attempt to be precise, with a throw of 65.62m. Sundar endured three foul throws but his best attempt came in the fourth with a throw of 64.96m.
