Formula 1 fans around the world were touched after F1 legend Michael Schumacher made a rare and emotional gesture. This was one of the very few public acts he has made since his tragic skiing accident 12 years ago. Schumacher is a seven-time world champion and one of the greatest drivers in F1 history.
A rare and emotional gesture from Schumacher
Schumacher signed a special racing helmet belonging to another F1 legend, Sir Jackie Stewart with the help of his wife, Corinna Schumacher. He wrote his initials ‘M.S’ on the helmet, which is now even more special because it includes the signatures of all 20 living Formula 1 world champions.
This helmet will be auctioned to raise money for Jackie Stewart’s charity, Race Against Dementia, which is working hard to find a cure for the disease. Speaking to the Daily Mail, Stewart said, “It is wonderful that Michael could sign the helmet in this worthy cause – a disease for which there is no cure. His wife helped him, and it completed the set of every single champion still with us.”
Schumacher’s gesture is making the fans emotional, as he has not been seen in public since his serious head injury while skiing in the French Alps back in 2013. He was put into a medically-induced coma and is believed to still require full-time care at home. His condition has been kept private by his wife.
Meanwhile, Stewart even got behind the wheel of his old Tyrrell 006 car, the one he drove to win his last F1 title. This touching moment happened during a special celebration of Formula 1’s 75th anniversary at the Bahrain Grand Prix . The occasion also marked Stewart’s 60th anniversary in F1 and the 10-year anniversary of his charity.
