According to a report by Hindustan Times, the strain in their relationship reportedly began after Onler’s defeat in the 2022 Manipur Assembly Elections. The couple is said to have spent an estimated Rs 2 to 3 crore during the campaign, a financial setback that allegedly left both distressed. A source close to the family revealed that Mary was deeply upset about the election result and the monetary loss.
“Mary moved to Faridabad with their four children, while Onler has been living in Delhi with some family members. Their differences escalated after the elections. Mary was reportedly unhappy about the financial losses and the fact that he lost,” a source close to Mary and Onler told Hindustan Times.
The report further claimed that Onler had initially been reluctant to enter politics, allegedly warning Mary about the current situation of Manipur’s political landscape. Manipur has been witnessing unrest due to conflict between the Kuki and Meitei tribes. Despite this, Onler eventually agreed to contest and lost, following which things became more sour between the couple.
“It was Mary’s idea. He didn’t want to contest. After the defeat, things worsened. Their usual marital disagreements turned serious," the source added.

Adding fuel to the fire are rumours circulating within the boxing community. A boxer, speaking on the condition of anonymity, told HT that the divorce speculation might not be baseless. The same source also alleged that Mary could be involved in a relationship with another boxer’s husband, noting that her recent Instagram posts have featured the man as her business associate.
“The separation rumours about Mary Kom and Onler might not be just rumours. No one knows the reason for sure, though. Everyone whispers about Mary ma’am being in a relationship with another boxer’s husband. Speculation has been fuelled further by her recent Instagram posts featuring him as her business associate.”
