IPL 6 as it happened: Sunrisers top table after beating KXIP

2315 IST SIX! Perera has done it again. This one was short and Perera uncorks the short-arm pull and sends the ball into the stratosphere. Just three needed now. SIX! He finishes things off in style. This one sails over the long-on boundary. Sunrisers have won by 5 wickets. Perera finishes with 23 from 11 balls to see them over the line.

Thisara Perrera-not a bad acquisition that! Congrats on top spot @TomMoodyCricket #PepsiIPL

— Isa Guha (@isaguha) April 19, 2013

Perera!! Am sure he made Azhar Mehmood feel like Chetan Sharma!! #PepsiIPL @MishiAmit the current purple cap holder:)

That is it from us tonight. Join us again for tomorrow’s double-header. 2309 IST SIX! Perera, you beauty! Plants the front foot and dispatches Mahmood over long-on. That swings things heavily in Sunrisers’ favour. The next ball is a bouncer and called a wide, perhaps harshly. Seven from one ball so far. 2307 IST Perera brings up the 100 for the home side by upper cutting a short ball to third man for a single. Gony is into his final over here. Ashish Reddy pulls Gony for four past a diving fielder on the ropes. After 18 overs, Sunrisers are 106/5. They need 18 from the last two overs. 2302 IST OUT! Mahmood gets one to seam in and keep a bit low. It strikes Samantray on the back pad as he drives and the umpire raises his finger. But with just 26 needed from 3.5 overs, KXIP will have to do produce something akin to Mishra’s spell for Sunrisers against Pune to win this game. Sunrisers are 97/5 after 16.1 overs. Samantray lbw b Azhar Mahmood 10 (12b 1x4 0x6) Samantray was moving across his stumps and it was very close whether he was struck outside the line. Just 2 from Mahmood’s over. After 17, Sunrisers are 99/5. They need 25 from the last 3 overs to win. 2256 IST Perera is the new man in. He could finish the game off with a few lusty blows. Gets off the mark with a single to third man. Samantray then opens the face of the bat and guides Gony past point for four. Gilly then gives away four byes as he can’t handle one from Gony that bounces just short of him. After 16 overs, Sunrisers are 97/4. 2252 IST OUT! White is cleaned up by Gony. The ball kept a touch low and White couldn’t get his bat down in time. KXIP not completely out of this game yet. White b Gony 16 (23b 1x4 0x6). 2250 IST Chawla bowls out his final over for five runs. Finishes with 1 for 25. After 15 overs, Sunrisers are 87/3, needing another 37 from 30 balls. White is on 16 and Samantary on 5. 2240 IST Mahmood bowls a tidy over, giving away just 5 runs. The required-rate has climbed to 7 an over now. White and Samantray are at the crease. White hooks Gony behind square for a much needed boundary. That got big on him but he managed to control it in the end. After 14 overs, Sunrisers are 82/3.

Looks like sunrisers in command

— Lalit Kumar Modi (@LalitKModi) April 19, 2013

2236 IST OUT! Chawla gets his man. Vihrai goes down on one knee and tries to go inside out again but this time only spoons a catch to Hussey at cover. He grimaces and looks to the heavens as walks off. That was a shot he did not need to play at this stage. Surnrisers are 70/3 after 12 overs Vihari c Hussey b Chawla 46 (39b 5x4 0x6) 2232 IST Now that Vihari has played himself in, he is becoming more aggressive. Short-arm pulls MAscarenhas to the square-leg boundary past a diving Valthaty, then flicks him for a couple more. 10 off the over. After 11, Sunrisers are 66/2, with Vihari on 43 and White on 4. 2225 IST Chawla comes back and Vihari goes inside-out over extra cover. A couple of singles round off the scoring from the over. After 10, Sunrisers are 56/2. They need another 68 runs from the remaining 10 overs. 2225 IST Mascarenhas completes his third over, giving away just 2 runs. Vihari brings up Sunrisers’ 50 with a single to third man. After 9 overs, Sunrisers are 50/2. Cameron White is on one and Vihari on 30. 2220 IST The first sighting of Gony with the ball. Akshath Reddy punches a full delivery over mid-on. OUT! He tries to do the same over mid-off but Mahmood anticipates the shot and makes a spectacular one-handed leaping catch moving to his right to send back Reddy.Sunrisers are 48/2 after 7.5 overs. Reddy c Azhar Mahmood b Gony 19 (17b 2x4 0x6) 2215 IST Azhar Mahmood comes on and Vihari punches him through the covers. Eight from the over. After 6, Sunrisers are 33/1. Piyush Chawla and spin to bowl as soon as the Powerplay overs are done. Vihari paddle sweeps him fine, then late cuts fine for boundaries. 10 from the over. After 7, Sunrisers are 43/1 and starting to get on top. 2206 IST Gurkeerat does splendidly to pull in the ball in short of the cover boundary. He made a lot of ground to save a run. Then has to do it all over again as the batsmen pick up three more. Nine in all from Praveen’s third over. After 5, Sunrisers are 25/1.

2202 IST Mascarenhas gets a second over. Not much happening though. Four singles and a two. After 4 overs, Sunrisers are 16/1. This pitch is not proving easy to bat on at all. Tidy over from Praveen. Just two from it. Hussey had a chance to run out Vihari from midwicket. Had he hit at the bowler’s end. Vihari was a gone. After 3, Sunrisers are 11/1.

@lionsdenkxip Piyush Chawla should get a nod before Gony. Spinner will do the trick for Punjab! #KXIPL #KXIP

STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD

2154 IST Mascarenhas starts at the other end. A steady over until Akshath Reddy slams him to long-on for four. After 2 overs, Sunrisers are 8/1.

Number of times teams have been 0/1 in #IPL6 : 9 times (Batting 1st: 4 times; batting 2nd: 5 times)

— Mohandas Menon (@mohanstatsman) April 19, 2013

2149 IST Akshath Reddy and de Kock are the openers for Sunrisers. Praveen Kumar has the ball. OUT! All those people calling for Kock to be in the side must be going quiet now. Praveen gets one to swing in and Kock plays all around it and is bowled. Sunrisers are 0/1. Q de Kock b Kumar 0 (4b 0x4 0x6) 2130 IST Amit Mishra is now the purple cap holder in the IPL with 11 wickets. Perera is bowling the final over. Steyn finishes with 1 for 14, Mishra with 2 for 29. No big shots in the final over. Six runs from it. KXIP finish with 123/9 after 20 overs.

'Senseless batting' is a term used way too often in this IPL...

— Aakash Chopra (@cricketaakash) April 19, 2013
STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD

2121 IST OUT! Four in four now. Steyn bowls Gurkeerat. The batsman made room to go through the offside but was beaten by pace and saw his middle stump go for a tumble. Kings XI now 115/9 after 18.1 overs. Gurkeerat Singh b Steyn 17 (12b 1x4 1x6).

Punjab's batsmen seem to have left their brains behind in Mohali...

— Cricketwallah (@cricketwallah) April 19, 2013

2121 IST OUT! Mishra gets two wickets and that is three in three for Sunrisers. Vohra hit it straight to Ishant at midwicket. Vohra c I Sharma b Mishra 0 (1b 0x4 0x6) OUT! Gony is run-out without facing a ball. Gony took off for a non-existent second run and is run out by some distance as Gurkeerat watched him in disbelief. Mishra to bowl his final over. Gurkeerat starts with a sweep for four and Mahmood drives him over cover for another four. OUT! Mahmood doesn’t stay long. Tries to go over long-on but doesn’t clear the fielder. KXIP now 114/6. Can Gony reproduce the same sort of innings he played against KKR? Mahmood c Ashish Reddy b Mishra 4 (4b 1x4 0x6) 2110 IST OUT! Hussey carves Ishant to deep mid-of trying to push the pace. The fielder bobbles the ball but catches it on his second attempt. KXIP now 105/1 after 17 overs. Hussey c Reddy b I Sharma 22 (24b 1x4 1x6) 2110 IST Gurkeerat Singh has come out instead of Mascarenhas and he lets us know why by lofting a full delivery from Mishra over long-on for SIX!. Played that with a wonderfully straight bat. Ten runs from the over. After 16 overs, KXIP are 102/4. 2102 IST OUT! Too many batsmen seem to want singles that aren’t there. Chawla mistimed the pull and couldn’t recover in time to make the non-striker’s end after being pushed on the back foot. KXIP now 88/4 after 14.1 overs. Chawla run out 23 (15b 1x4 2x6). 2100 IST Ishant returns and Hussey is grateful. Pulls him sweetly over the mid-wicket for SIX! Nine from the over. After 14, KXIP are 88/3.

Feeding leg spin to Chawla??? That's one of the reasons that an Indian captain works a little better!

— Aakash Chopra (@cricketaakash) April 19, 2013

2057 IST Chawla tonks Mishra for a four straight down the ground too and White is forced to bring back Perera, who temporarily slows the flow of runs, giving away just three from the 13th over. KXIP are 79/3 with seven overs to go. 2048 IST Legspinner vs legspinner and the one with bat wins. Chawla hits Karan for two sixes. the first swept over deep square leg, the second smashed straight over the sight screen. 14 from the over. Kings XI are 69/3.

Two big sixes from Piyush Chawla :O Some relief @lionsdenkxip and for their fans :-) We Want More !! #PepsiIPL #KXIPvsSRH

— Pratibha Mehra (@pratibhasays) April 19, 2013

2045 IST White brings back Steyn with two new batsmen at the crease. Piyush Chawla is the new man, to everyone’s surprise. Hussey gets an inside edge that narrowly misses offstump, then runs away to the boundary. After 10, Kings XI are 55/3. 2039 IST OUT! Valthaty’s painful vigil is over. He had no idea how to play the legspinner and has come undone. Full delivery outside off and Valthaty tries to hammer it over long-off. But there is no power in the shot and Perera takes an easy catch. KXIP suddenly 48/3 after 9 overs. Valthaty c Perera b KV Sharma 6 (17b 0x4 0x6).

Really like @TomMoodyCricket ruthless, yet pragmatic approach to making the most of the available resources. reputations count for nothing!

— Aakash Chopra (@cricketaakash) April 19, 2013

2035 IST OUT! Gilchrist has given away. Goes back to pull a short ball from Mishra but the ball doesn’t come on as quickly as he expected. Ishant at deep midwicket takes a comfortable catch. KXIP now 47/2 after 8.4 overs. Gilchrist c I Sharma b KV Sharma 26 (25b 4x4 0x6).

Paul Valthaty looks a shadow of the player who could destroy attacks. Sorted out all too easily....

— Cricketwallah (@cricketwallah) April 19, 2013

2028 IST Mishra comes on immediately. Tidy over by Mishra, but not as much turn as Karan. After 8 overs, KXIP are 45/1, with Gilchrist on 25 and Valthaty on 5. 2028 IST Karan Sharma comes on and gets some turn. First delivery goes past Valthaty’s bat. So does the second, with some sharp spin. That moved appreciably off the pitch. Karan almost gets the edge he was looking for off the last ball but it beats the keeper too and runs away for four byes. After 7 overs, KXIP are 42/1 and Amit Mishra must be licking his lips. 2024 IST Gilchrist seems to be in good nick today. Ishant is short and wide and he square cuts magnificently over the infield. After 6 overs, KXIP are 36/1. 2020 IST Thisara Perera comes on and Gilly slashes him between point and gully. He looks determined to make a score today. Perera drops marginally short and Gilly is quick to pull him over midwicket. No protection there and the ball rolls over the rope. The next one is fuller and Gilly picks it up and smashes it to long-on for another four. That was vintage Gilchrist. Valthaty sets off for a suicidal single off the last ball and is just able to turn and make his ground as Perera gathers the throw and hits the stumps. That would have been a very foolish way to get out. 12 from the over. After 5, Kings XI are 29/1. 2010 IST Paul Valthaty gets his first game of the season. Has to start against Steyn, who bounces him first up. It is far enough outside off for Valthaty to easily sway out of the way though. Just one from the over - a single by Gilly. After 4 overs, KXIP are 17/1. 2010 IST Ishant Sharma comes on and the runs start flowing. Mandeep pulls him square off the first ball for four. OUT! But he gets carried away. Tries to thump another short ball out of the ground and only gets a top edge. de Kock runs a long way back and takes a good catch with the ball swirling. KXIP are 16/1 after 3 overs. Mandeep Singh c †de Kock b I Sharma 10 (11b 1x4 0x6).

Making mistakes is absolutely fine, provided you learn from them. Mandeep Singh is making the same mistakes..pull shot is pulling him down!

— Aakash Chopra (@cricketaakash) April 19, 2013

2005 IST Now we have Steyn. A miked-up Vihari says he doesn’t think the pitch will spin much, but it is on the slower side. Steyn is a bit too short to Gilchrist, allowing him to play a couple of pull shots. Four from the over - KXIP are 6/0 after 2. 2001 IST In something of a surprise, Vihari has opened the bowling for Sunrisers. No Steyn vs Gilly yet. Mandeep and Gilchrist pick up a single each. After 1, KXIP are 2/0. 1941 IST Kings XI have made a couple of changes. Mascarenhas comes in, as does one-time IPL darling Paul Valthaty. Sunrisers have dropped Partiv Patel and Reddy comes in. Here are the team XIs. KXIP: Gilchrist, Mandeep Singh, Valthaty, David Hussey, Mahmood, Vohra, Gurkeerat Singh, Chawla, Kumar, Gony, Mascarenhas. Sunrisers: White, Perera, de Kock, Vihari, Ashish Reddy, KV Sharma, Samantaray, Mishra, Steyn, Ishant Sharma, Akshath Reddy. 1930 IST Gilchrist says there is no particular reason to bat first. Thinks the wicket might slow up later. Looks a bit patchy. Cameron White agrees it looks patchy. 1920 IST Hello and welcome to our coverage of tonight’s game. Sunrisers Hyderabad will once again be banking on its lethal bowling unit to deliver the goods when they take on an unpredictable Kings XI Punjab today. With the world’s no 1 bowler Dale Steyn, Ishant Sharma, Thissara Perera and willy leg-spinner Amit Mishra, the Sunrisers possesses a formidable bowling outfit which has played crucial roles in all their four wins so far in the tournament. [caption id=“attachment_713656” align=“alignleft” width=“380”] ![Dale Steyn has been the leader of Sunrisers' formidable bowling attack. BCCI](https://images.firstpost.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/04/Steyn-BCCI.jpg) Dale Steyn has been the leader of Sunrisers’ formidable bowling attack. BCCI[/caption] In their last game, defending a small target of 120 runs, leg-spinner Mishra produced a stunning performance taking four wickets in five deliveries, including a hat-trick — his third in the IPL - to pull off an incredible 11-run victory over Pune Warriors. Mishra took the wickets with his second, fourth, fifth and sixth deliveries off his final over to bowl out Warriors for 108 in 19 overs. Kings XI, on the other hand, will be high on confidence following their stunning four-run win over defending champions Kolkata Knight Riders in the last game. Defending a decent target of 158, Kings XI restricted KKR to 153 for nine despite a 105-run second wicket partnership between Gautam Gambhir and Eoin Morgan. Manpreet Gony, playing in his first game of the season, made a big impact in the final outcome of the game against KKR. First he used his long-handle to good effect as his 42 off 18 balls took Kings XI past 150-run mark. And later he removed a set Gambhir to bring the Punjab outfit back in the match. Kings XI will be hoping to start a winning run since the Adam Gilchrist-led side has won only two matches out of the four they have played so far in the league. With inputs from PTI
