As it happened: Warriors upset Super Kings by 24 runs

2325 IST Pune Warriors have upset the Super Kings apple cart here. It was a poor batting performance from the hosts but all credit must go to the Warriors bowlers, who had a torrid time against Mumbai but bowled very well here.

Not today CSK and well played Warriors! Pune's upset win makes the battle for the top four places stiffer...

— Cricketwallah (@cricketwallah) April 15, 2013

For the full scorecard from the match, click here . 2322 IST Finch produces something special to send back Albie. The batsman smashes Dinda to long-off, where Finch leaps and snags the ball two-handed before landing just inside the ropes and keeping his balance. That was hit hard. Allan Donald jumps out of his chair in delight. Morkel c Finch b Dinda 13 (11b 0x4 1x6) CSK now 124/8.

2318 IST Bhuvi Kumar is bowling the 19th over. He keeps it tight, just six runs conceded. PWI just one over away from a huge upset. 2314 IST Dinda comes back. This is the make or break over. He has a tendency to go for a few. I owe Dinda an apology. Smith is a ball magnet at long-off today. Dhoni tries the helicopter shot to a full delivery but hits it flat and straight to Smith. CSK are 115/7 and it is hard to see them coming back from here. Dhoni c Smith b Dinda 10 (13b 0x4 0x6) Excellent over from Dinda. Takes out Dhoni and gives up just four runs. At 118/7, CSK need 42 from 12 balls.

2309 IST Marsh continues. CSK need 14 runs an over now. Albie Morkel and Dhoni are the batsmen. Can’t rule CSK out yet with Dhoni at the crease. One big over can change everything. Morkel gets CSK underway by lifting Marsh for six over long-on. He got under the ball - the bat opened in his hands, but still had enough on it to go over the rope. Still, “just” ten from the over. After 17, CSK are 114/6. 2300 IST Bravo is gone too! Tries to swat Rahul over long-off but doesn’t time it and a gleeful Smith accepts the catch. CSK are now 104/6 and unravelling at home. Bravo c Smith b Sharma 1 (4b 0x4 0x6)

because #csk win so many close matches, i wonder if they think that is the only way to win matches.

— Harsha Bhogle (@bhogleharsha) April 15, 2013

Rahul Sharma almost gets Dhoni. An attempted cut shot loops slowly to short third man but but bounces agonisingly short. Rubbing salt in the wound, the ball gets away from the diving fielder and the batsmen pick up three. 2257 IST With 5 overs to go, CSK need 60 runs or 12 runs an over. 2255 IST The crowd is stunned. Marsh bowls one down legside and Jadeja seems to have helped it on its way. Except he hits it straight to Dinda at short fine leg, who does well to take a sharp catch. That is a big blow for CSK. PWI have to be the favourites now. CSK are 98/5 after 14.4 overs. Jadeja c Dinda b Marsh 27 (22b 1x4 1x6) Dwayne Bravo comes out to join his captain.

STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD

2251 IST ‘Sir’ Jadeja takes a fancy to Rahul Sharma and deposits him over the long-off boundary for SIX! He and MS Dhoni can see their side home even facing a required-rate of over 10 an over. Nine runs come off Sharma. CSK are 95/4 after 14 overs. They need 65 from 36 balls. 2248 IST Marsh returns. Jadeja swings him over a leaping midwicket to the boundary. That wasn’t really a chance. But Marsh provides the breakthrough. Badrinath tries to press the accelerator. Comes down the track and goes inside out but doesn’t get the power. Smith comes running in from long-off to take a good low catch. CSK lose their fourth wicket. They are 86/4 after 13 overs. S Badrinath c Smith b Marsh 34 (26b 4x4 0x6) 2243 IST Sharma continues. Nayar had a chance to run-out Jadeja but a wayward throw from short fine leg allows the batsman the time to scamper home. Sharma manages to keep the batsmen from playing big shots. After 12 overs, CSK are 78/3. The required run-rate is now over 10. 2238 IST Badrinath goes down on knee and clinically slogs Nayar to the midwicket boundary. Picked his spot perfectly. That was a good over for the hosts as 10 came from it. They move to 73/3 aftre 11 overs.

2234 IST Rahul Sharma comes on in place of Finch. PWI need another wicket now if they want to put real pressure on CSK. The asking rate is already climbing up towards 10 an over but CSK chased down 71 from 6 against RCB in their last game. Solid over from Rahul. Just six conceded. CSK are 63/2 after 10 overs, needing a further 97 from 60 balls. Jadeja is on 6 and Badrinath on 24. 2228 IST Taylor hands the ball to Finch now. That doesn’t turn out quite as well. Badri pulls him to the midwicket fence and CSK take 9 from him. After 8 overs, they are 54/3.

Nayar though keeps it tight. His (lack of) pace is proving hard to get away. Just three from his over. After 9 overs, CSK are 57/3. 2218 IST Nayar comes on. Interesting move from Taylor and it pays big dividends. Vijay tries the cross-batted swipe at length ball outside off but skies it and Taylor takes a well judged catch in the covers. CSK are now 40/3. Vijay c Taylor b Nayar 24 (22b 2x4 1x6). Sir Jadeja makes his appearance. After 7 overs, CSK are 45/3.

Hmmm...Pune have Chennai in a really tight spot now. Let"s see if they can pull thru this time too

— Cricketwallah (@cricketwallah) April 15, 2013

2214 IST Mitchell Marsh replaces Dinda. He strays down leg Badrinath tucks him round the corner for four before Vijay arrogantly smacks him over long-on. That was a length ball and Vijay just teed off. After 6 overs, CSK are 38/2, with Vijay on 22 and Bradinath on 7. 2207 IST Bhuvi Kumar has struck again. Suresh Raina ties to slog him over mid-on, completely mistimes it and this time Suman hangs on to a more difficult chance, coming forward and taking it low. CSK are 23/2. Can Pune pull off an upset here? SK Raina c Suman b Kumar 8 (10b 1x4 0x6). Badrinath is the new batsman. After 5 overs, CSK are 25/2. Bhuvi Kumar has figures of 3-1-6-2. Dinda has figures of 2-0-19-2. 2200 IST An excellent second over from Bhuvi, just two runs from it. After 3, CSK are 11/1. Dinda is proving to be a little more expensive though. Vijay swats him over square leg before tickling him fine to short leg for consecutive fours. After 4 overs, CSK are 22/1. 2152 IST Ashok Dinda has the ball at the other end. Vijay pulls a short ball straight to T Suman at mid-on, who somehow finds a way to drop it. All he had to do was take one step to his right and get his hands in the right position. He managed the first, but not the second. That could be costly for PWI. Raina ends the over by pulling Dinda for four. After two overs, CSK are 7/1. 2143 IST We are back for CSK’s chase. Vijay and Anirudha are the batsmen. Bhuvi Kumar is the bowler for PWI. Anirudha doesn’t stick around long, though. Kumar gets one to seam in and he is late on the shot and hit on the pad. Up goes the umpire’s finger. CSK are 0/1. Anirudha lbw b Kumar 0 (2b 0x4 0x6). Raina comes in to face his India limited overs teammate. 2130 IST PWI finish on 159/5 with Smith unbeaten on 39 from 16 balls. It was a blistering late assault from him and together with Aaron Finch, has given Warriors a fighting chance in this game.

Fine batting performance by Pune but have they done enough against a strong side? For the moment tho let's laud scintillating Smith...

— Cricketwallah (@cricketwallah) April 15, 2013

2126 IST Smith showing Pune are foolish not to have played him in every match. He reverse-sweeps Bravo for six over third man. Then roars in excitement. After a single, Manish Pandey slashes Bravo to the point fence. Bravo has the last laugh though. Pandey has a wild slog and comes nowhere near the ball, which hits the top of offstump. PWI are 159/5 with one ball to go. MK Pandey b Bravo 9 (8b 1x4 0x6) 2120 IST Smith heaves Nannes over the fine leg boundary. That was full but Smith moved to the offside and swept it uppishly over the rope. PWI need a few more of those. Nannes goes wide on the offside next ball and Smith reaches out and slashes it to the point boundary. Turned into a very good over for PWI - 16 from it. After 19 overs, PWI are 147/4, with Smith on 32 from 13 balls and Pandey on 5. 2114 IST Another wicket of the first ball of the over. That’s three of the last four overs. Marsh tries to slash Bravo but only gets a top edge that flies to third man. Albie Morkel loses his balance taking the catch but manages to avoid falling on the rope. PWI throwing it away after their excellent start. They are 128/4 now. Marsh c Morkel b Bravo 2 (4b 0x4 0x6). After 18 overs, PWI are 131/4.

2105 IST Taylor falls off the first ball of the 17th over. Morris gets another wicket. Taylor tried to hit over long-on with a cross-batted swipe, but didn’t get the elevation or the power. That is a big blow. LRPL Taylor c Jadeja b Morris 8 (13b 0x4 0x6) Mitchell Marsh is out in the middle. Much will depend on this pair now. Smith uncorks on Morris, muscling a length ball over the midwicket boundary for SIX! After 17 overs, PWI are 128/3. 2101 IST Smith charges Bravo, who sees him coming and bounces him. Smith jabs at the ball and somehow gets an edge that takes it away from the keeper for four. Plays a proper cricket shot the next delivery - pulls Bravo between the two fielders on the legside for four more. Very good over for Warriors as 12 comes from it. AFter 16, they are 118/2. 2056 IST Ashwin continues. Taylor brings up PWI’s 100 with a quiet single to leg. Uthappa is starting to look aggressive, but so far as only succeeded in picking up singles to the fielders in the deep. Morris starts the 15th over by dismissing Uthappa. The batsman tries to hit him straight back down the ground but checks his stroke and only finds Vijay and long-on. Uthappa just seems to be lacking that bit of confidence. Uthappa c Jadeja b Morris 26 (33b 2x4 0x6). Steven Smith comes out to bat. After 15 overs, PWI are 106/2. 2046 IST Finch hits Jadeja for a huge six over long-on but is promptly stumped off the next delivery. Gives Jadeja a charge but doesn’t get to the pitch and allows the ball to sneak between bat and pad. He is disappointed but what a start he has given PWI. Ross Taylor is the new man. Finch st †Dhoni b Jadeja 67 (45b 10x4 2x6). After 13 overs, PWI are 97/1. 2044 IST Ashwin comes back. Both batsmen try to attack him but Dhoni has the field well placed. Five singles is all they manage. After 12 overs, PWI are 89/0.

STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD

2040 IST Finch backs away to give himself room and Morris bowls wide of the offstump but somehow Finch is still able to reach it and swats Morris to the cover fence. This is turning out to be a sensational knock from him. The four came a ball after Morris hit him in the stomach as Finch went for the pull and missed. Just six from that over though. After 11, PWI are 84/0, with Finch on 60 and Uthappa on 20. 2036 IST Dwayne Bravo gets us started after the strategic timeout. Uthappa gets PWI started by square cutting a wide ball for four. The rest of the over is a diet of singles. Eight from it. After 10, PWI are 78/0. This is an excellent platform from which to launch.

Finch is definitely much more than a Pinch hitter...now, the situation is Taylor-made for Ross to walk in if a wicket falls. #couldntresist

— Aakash Chopra (@cricketaakash) April 15, 2013

2032 IST Chris Morris gets the ball now. Finch brings up his half-century with an attempted pull. The top edge flies over the fielder at fine leg and goes one bounce over the rope. It Finch just 32 balls to reach his 50, having hit 9 fours and a six. Seven from the over. PWI are 70/0 after nine overs. Pretty sure nobody predicted this. Not even the PWI dressing room.

2025 IST Finch smashes Ashwin for a huge straight six. Gives himself room and swings cleanly through the ball. Pune not looking like a side in disarray, one that is missing their captain. Uthappa playing the reverse sweep to Ashwin is not the best choice of shot though. Misses but is hit outside the line. 10 from the over. After 8, PWI are 63/0, with Finch on 48 and Uthappa on 12.

2025 IST R Ashwin is on as first change. Gets it horribly wrong and Uthappa paddles him over short fine leg. Six taken from the over as PWI move to 48/0 from 6. Jadeja continues. Change of ends for him.Uthappa brings up PWI’s 50 with a single through the offside. Just five from this over. After 7, PWI are 53/0.

Great first 5 overs by Pune warriors.

— Lalit Kumar Modi (@LalitKModi) April 15, 2013

2019 IST Finch pulls Nannes powerfully in front of square first ball. Later in the over, when Nannes pitches one up, Finch lofts him over mid-on for another four. Another good over for PWI. Ten from it. After 5, they are 42/0. Finch has 36 from 22 balls. 2014 IST Finch cuts Jadeja to the cover fence first ball. One ball later he makes room and carves Jadeja over the infield to the point boundary. Looks in very good nick. Nine from the over. PWI are 32/0 after 4 overs, with Finch on 27 and Uthappa on 3.

2012 IST This is a much tighter over from Nannes. Has both batsman hopping around the crease. Just four from it and an appeal for leg-before against Finch, but that pitched outside leg and would have missed off. AFter 3 overs, PWI are 22/0. 2008 IST ‘Sir’ Ravindra Jadeja opens the bowling at the other end. Finch is not impressed with Jadeja’s social media prowess though, and cranks him through extra-cover. That is the only big blow in the over. Just two runs from the other five balls, so Warriors are 19/0 after 2.

2003 IST Finch gets off to a much better start, crunching Nannes straight back past the non-striker’s end before smashing him over mid-off, both times for four. He gets a third four when an inside edge darts past legstump. At the end of the first over, Warriors are 13/0. 1954 IST Play is about to begin. The CSK players are walking out and so are the umpires. The Pune openers are waiting their turn. 1944 IST Here are the playing XIs: Warriors: Finch, Uthappa, Pandey, Taylor (c), T Suman, Smith, Nayar, Marsha, Kumar, Rahul Sharma, Dinda. Super Kings: Vijay, Anirudha, Raina, Badrinath, Dhoni (c), Jadeja, Bravo, Morkel, Ashwin, Morris, Nannes.

Chennai stadium looks empty today. Any reason ??

— Lalit Kumar Modi (@LalitKModi) April 15, 2013

1930 IST Ross Taylor has won the toss and Pune Warriors will bat first. Says the wicket looks like a very good one. MS Dhoni also says he would have batted first. Manish Pandey is in for Yuvraj Singh and Steve Smith finally gets a game in place of Mathews, who cannot play because Sri Lankan players are banned from playing in Chennai. CSK have also made a couple of changes. Albie Morkel comes in for Michael Hussey, while Anirudha Srikanth will get his first game this season in place of Mohit Sharma.

The only good thing that has come out of 'No Sri Lankans in Chennai' issue is that PWI is forced to play Steve Smith. Sanity restored.

— Aakash Chopra (@cricketaakash) April 15, 2013

1927 IST It is almost time for the toss. MS Dhoni says CSK have done brilliantly in their last two games, in both batting and bowling and that is important to keep the momentum going. Beating RCB in their last game has been good for their confidence. “You start believing in yourself and you start believing in others.”

Missing the game today but I wish my team all the best go pune warriors #ipl

— Yuvraj Singh (@YUVSTRONG12) April 15, 2013

1910 IST Pune are a team in disarray. Can’t see them beating CSK tonight. The visitors are easy meat at the moment, and have lost Mathews and Yuvraj. This might mean Steven Smith will get a game, though. The Twitterverse has been adamant that he should be playing. 1850 IST Having pulled off a dramatic win in their last match, the in-form Chennai Super Kings will look to consolidate their position as they host a Pune Warriors India side that has won just one of their last 13 games stretching across two IPL seasons. Chennai seem to have got their mojo back after posting back-to-back wins, including Saturday night’s victory over Royal Challengers Bangalore, in a match they should have lost. On the other hand, Pune have only beaten Rajasthan Royals, losing their other three games. Warriors have added problems because they will be missing their captain, Angelo Mathews, and most likely Yuvraj Singh as well. Ross Taylor will captain the side in Mathews absence. [caption id=“attachment_700236” align=“alignleft” width=“380”] ![Ravindra Jadeja was the match-winner for CSK in their last game. BCCI](https://images.firstpost.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/04/Jadeja-CSK-BCCI.jpg) Ravindra Jadeja was the match-winner for CSK in their last game. BCCI[/caption] CSK have greater depth and their batting has been far stronger than Warriors so far. With Mike Hussey and Murali Vijay at the top, Chennai have a formidable opening pair, both of whom are in good nick. And MS Dhoni has shown he has lost none of his finishing skills. The allrounders Dwayne Bravo, Ravindra Jadeja and R Ashwin add plenty of flexibility to the side, and it was Jadeja who stole the limelight in the win over RCB. As far as Chennai`s bowling is concerned, they have the pacers as well spinners to not only take wickets, but also stem the flow of runs. For Pune, Mitchell Marsh, Bhuvnehswar Kumar and, of course, Ashok Dinda will have to be on the money from the word go against Chennai. Dinda was smashed for over 60 runs by Mumbai yesterday, and his confidence must have taken a beating. Squads: Chennai Super Kings: MS Dhoni (c/wk), Srikkanth Anirudha Baba Aparajith, Ravichandran Ashwin, Subramaniam Badrinath, Dwayne Bravo, Akila Dananjaya, Faf du Plessis, Ben Hilfenhaus, Jason Holder, Michael Hussey, Imtiaz Ahmed, Ravindra Jadeja, Shadab Jakati, R Karthikeyan, Nuwan Kulasekara, Ben Laughlin, Ronit More, Albie Morkel, Chris Morris, Dirk Nannes, Suresh Raina, Ankit Rajpoot, Wriddhiman Saha (wk), Vijay Shankar, Mohit Sharma, Murali Vijay. Pune Warriors: Angelo Mathews (Captain), Yuvraj Singh, Abhishek Nayar, Robin Uthappa, Ross Taylor, Ajanta Mendis, Manish Pandey, Marlon Samuels, Mitchell Marsh, Mithun Manhas, Parveez Rasool, Rahul Sharma, Ali Murtaza, Anustup Mazumdar, Ashok Dinda, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Dheeraj Jadhav, Eklavya Dwivedi, Harpreet Singh, Ishwar Pandey, Kane Richardson, Krishnakant Upadhyay, Luke Wright, Mahesh Rawat, R Gomez, Shrikant Wagh, Steve Smith, T Suman, Tamim Iqbal, Udit Birla, Aaron Finch.
