That’s it from us folks!

Mumbai City are through to their first-ever ISL final, and they did it by the skin of their teeth, needing penalties and sudden death to seal their berth in the tournament finale. It was a very balanced contest, and FC Goa in fact had the better of the opportunities, but they were unable to make the most of them. Join us tomorrow as we bring you all the latest updates from the second leg of the match between ATK Mohun Bagan and NorthEast United! Until then, goodbye and goodnight!

Mourtada Fall scores, and he does it in style with a little shimmy that throws off Naveen Kumar. Adil Khan then comes on, and just about gets enough on it to take it past a diving Lachenpa. Mandar Rao Dessai’s turn to step up, and he hits it hard into the side netting on the right, we’re all level! A break in play due to some problem with the netting, and I can breathe for a bit.

Donachie has let his team down for the second time tonight. He blasts his penalty right over the cross bar, it was an abysmal attempt. Can Mumbai take advantage?

Penalties (Aggregate 2-2): Mumbai City 0 – 0 FC Goa no

Well, that’s strange, Mumbai have replaced their goalkeeper as well. Amrinder’s off, and at the moment, this looks like a ludicrous decision. Phurba Lachenpa comes on in his place, and he will face the first penalty. Edu Bedia’s up first, and you’d have to back him to score. You never know though, these pressure cooker scenarios can really get to players. Lachenpa saves, that was a terrible penalty! No conviction at all

ET: 120’ | Mumbai City 0 – 0 FC Goa (Aggregate 2-2)

Yeah, Naveen Kumar is going to be replacing Dheeraj for the penalty shootout a la Tim Krul and Jasper Cillessen. This is a huge, huge move from Juan Ferrando, but it makes sense to an extent. Dheeraj is only 20 years old, and in goalkeeper terms, that’s practically preschool level. Kumar’s experience could be huge for Goa. The end of open play is brought on by an FC Goa corner, that is put out of play by Amrinder. To penalties we go!

ET: 116’ | Mumbai City 0 – 0 FC Goa (Aggregate 2-2)

Pandita has looked really, really lively since coming on at half time, but as of yet, he’s only had that one good opportunity which he headed straight at Amrinder. FC Goa’s midfielders are either unable or unwilling to play the striker through when he’s running into space, and he’s cutting a frustrated figure at the moment.

March 8, 2021, 21:57:54 (IST)

ET: 114’ | Mumbai City 0 – 0 FC Goa (Aggregate 2-2)

Dheeraj looks fine now, but he might still be taken off in favour of the more experienced Naveen Kumar. At the other end of the pitch, Ishan Pandita almost scores after a stinker of a headed backpass from Hernan Santana, and Mumbai are bailed out yet again by Amrinder, who was quick to rush off his line and make a clearance.

March 8, 2021, 21:55:46 (IST)

ET: 110’ | Mumbai City 0 – 0 FC Goa (Aggregate 2-2)

Mumbai do well to keep the ball for a couple of minutes before Boumous is brought down by Ivan Gonzalez in a very good position. What can the likes of Ahmed Jahouh and Boumous do from here? It’s Jahouh who will take, and his ball is high and looping. Dheeraj comes flying in to claim the ball, but he takes out his own defender Ivan Gonzalez in a high-speed crash. Both players are laid out on the pitch at the moment, and this could be a worrying sign for Goa, with 10 minutes of play still left.

March 8, 2021, 21:51:21 (IST)

ET: 107’ | Mumbai City 0 – 0 FC Goa (Aggregate 2-2)

Right, we’re halfway through extra time, and at the moment, it looks like it could go either way. It just needs a moment of brilliance from one players, it’s poised on a knife-edge. Boumous goes down with a cramp seconds after the restart, and he receives a bit of treatment before getting up and limping right back into the thick of it. It’s been exhausting out here, and you’d forgive most of these players for dreaming about the comfort of a hot bath and a soft hotel bed right now. Still 15 minutes and maybe a few penalties to go though.

March 8, 2021, 21:46:53 (IST)

ET: 103’ | Mumbai City 0 – 0 FC Goa (Aggregate 2-2)

A huge opportunity for FC Goa, as they get a free kick in a decent area, and Edu Bedia stands over this one. It’s unlikely Ortiz will take it after he fluffed his last one, and it is indeed Bedia who sends the ball in, but it’s somewhere between a cross and a shot, and really not enough of either. Amrinder makes a pretty straightforward save, parrying over the crossbar. The corner is wasted as well.

ET: 99’ | Mumbai City 0 – 0 FC Goa (Aggregate 2-2)

ISL has just shown Jorge Ortiz’s touch map, and it looks like a massive storm just rolled in, it;s total, complete coverage all over the field. This man has put in a real shift tonight. My heart goes out to my colleague Anish Anand, who in his analysis of the first leg devoted two long paragraphs to Ortiz’s ability on the ball, and will now have to work doubly hard to avoid repeating himself when he writes a report about this match.

ET: 98’ | Mumbai City 0 – 0 FC Goa (Aggregate 2-2)

After putting in a wonderful ball at the other end, Jahouh puts his own side under pressure, needlessly fouling Jorge Ortiz. Edu Bedia puts in a decent ball, but it’s met by Ogbeche, who heads it up and away, out of danger.

March 8, 2021, 21:37:23 (IST)

ET: 96’ | Mumbai City 0 – 0 FC Goa (Aggregate 2-2)

Ahmed Jahouh has a chance to deliver another dangerous ball, after Mumbai win a corner high up on the right wing. The ball is whipped in hard and low, and it almost ends up in the back of the Goa net, stopped only by some alert defending from Ivan Gonzalez. That was a tricky ball to deal with, could have been a real problem for Goa.

March 8, 2021, 21:34:14 (IST)

ET: 92’ | Mumbai City 0 – 0 FC Goa (Aggregate 2-2)

Bartholomew Ogbeche does indeed come on, and it’s in place of Adam le Fondre. Le Fondre has put in a good shift, but he never really found himself in a position of any real danger. FC Goa apply the early pressure in the first half of extra time, pressing high up the pitch.

March 8, 2021, 21:26:36 (IST)

94’ | Mumbai City 0 – 0 FC Goa (Aggregate 2-2)

Jorge Ortiz and Vignesh Dakshinamurthy both go down with cramps within minutes of each other, and it’s not difficult to see why. This has been a real slog for both teams, it’s been filled with a lot of hard running and very little periods of relaxation. Vignesh is taken off, and he’s replaced by former Goa captain Mandar Rao Desai. There’s a great opportunity for Donachie in the very last minute of play, as Edu Bedia puts in a dangerous cross, but the Australian defender fails to connect with the ball. It only needed a slight touch. That’s the last action of regular time, and now we head into half an hour of extra time. Mumbai nil, FC Goa nil.

March 8, 2021, 21:22:28 (IST)

90’ | Mumbai City 0 – 0 FC Goa (Aggregate 2-2)

Mumbai City FC finally make a change, but it’s not Ogbeche who comes on. Instead, it’s Vikram Pratap Singh who replaces Bipin Singh. This is a bit strange from Lobera, and it appears to be a calculated decision. Maybe he’s saving Ogbeche for extra time?

March 8, 2021, 21:20:16 (IST)

88’ | Mumbai City 0 – 0 FC Goa (Aggregate 2-2)

Boumous is fouled by Noguera, and Jahou stands over the free kick. It’s aimed towards Adam le Fondre, but there’s too much on it, and Dheeraj gets there just ahead of an onrushing Bipin. This game looks like it’s heading into extra time, but there’s still a decent chunk of added time to come. At the moment it’s Mumbai who are creating the half chances, if they could steal something here it would be a spectacular smash and grab win.

85’ | Mumbai City 0 – 0 FC Goa (Aggregate 2-2)

Mumbai’s best player on the pitch tonight has probably been Amrinder Singh, and that’s really an indicator of the sort of night they’ve had. We have a long stoppage as Amrinder’s opposite number Dheeraj gets a bit of treatment for a knock.

March 8, 2021, 21:11:53 (IST)

80’ | Mumbai City 0 – 0 FC Goa (Aggregate 2-2)

Lovely work from Ivan Gonzalez to get himself into the Mumbai penalty area, but the ball just runs away from him a bit, and he’s forced into pulling off a desperate backheel pass that doesn’t make it into the feet of Jorge Ortiz.

March 8, 2021, 21:10:03 (IST)

78’ | Mumbai City 0 – 0 FC Goa (Aggregate 2-2)

Another change for Goa, and Romario’s time is done. He played well, putting in some really dangerous crosses, but he’s been a bit quiet lately. Sanson comes on in his place, and there’s another little tactical shift. Mumbai are yet to make a change, but you have to think that Bartholomew Ogbeche is going to feature at some point in this contest.

March 8, 2021, 21:07:02 (IST)

75’ | Mumbai City 0 – 0 FC Goa (Aggregate 2-2)

Ivan Gonzalez gives away a corner under some pressure from Bipin, and Mourtada Fall trudges up to the Goa penalty area again. Can Jahouh find the Senegalese defender this time? He almost does, but Saviour Gama just about gets there first to head it out of play. It should be a corner, but the referee doesn’t see it, and he gives a goalkick. We head into the second drinks break now.

March 8, 2021, 21:04:14 (IST)

73’ | Mumbai City 0 – 0 FC Goa (Aggregate 2-2)

We’re into the last 20 minutes or so, and there’s that a goal is coming soon. Both teams look a bit sharper than they did in the first half. Ortiz is caught by Ahmed Jahouh, but in the slow motion replay, it’s evident that the Goa midfielder made a bit more of it than he should have. The resultant free-kick is whipped in and it goes out for a corner off Raynier. The corner is played short, and it goes out for a Goa throw. Another corner for Goa, this one should be played in. And it is, it’s a wonderful ball that finds Donachie, but the Australian mistimes his jump and his header is too high.

March 8, 2021, 20:56:09 (IST)

63’ | Mumbai City 0 – 0 FC Goa (Aggregate 2-2)

Oh lord, Adam le Fondre is denied by a wonderful sliding tackle from Adil! The ball is whipped in by Bipin, and Le Fondre’s shot is hit hard and low, but a sliding Adil blocks it. FC Goa launch an instantaneous counter attack, and it takes Mumbai by surprise, as Romario sends in a dangerous cross, that a crouching Ishan Pandita heads straight at Amrinder. Excellent attacking work on both ends, as well as some gorgeous defending from Adil!

Boumous does really well to force an attack from sheer willpower, putting Bipin through on goal with a lovely pass. Bipin is unable to get a shot away, and instead opts to cross it back into the box, where it is headed straight up into the air by Adil. The ball falls at the feet of Boumous, but he rushes his attempt and it flies over crossbar.

March 8, 2021, 20:50:15 (IST)

58’ | Mumbai City 0 – 0 FC Goa (Aggregate 2-2)

Adil Khan gives away a terrible throw in after inexplicably shielding the ball out of play despite having had the last touch. Bit of a brain fade from the Goa defender. Luckily for him, nothing comes off it.

March 8, 2021, 20:48:18 (IST)

56’ | Mumbai City 0 – 0 FC Goa (Aggregate 2-2)

Mumbai are struggling a bit here. They’ve not quite wrapped their head around Goa’s new set up, and they look very frustrated. Boumous in particular is having quite a moan, he’s not liking the attention that he’s being given by Glan Martins. Saviour Gama takes a shot from many many yards out, it’s a good shot, but Amrinder makes it look a lot better than it actually was by awkwardly parrying it away instead of just holding on to it. Vignesh then commits a foul on the right wing, and Noguera whips in a very dangerous ball that is just about headed out for a goal by Mourtada Fall.

March 8, 2021, 20:45:07 (IST)

52’ | Mumbai City 0 – 0 FC Goa (Aggregate 2-2)

Ortiz is fouled by Rowllin Borges a few yards away from the penalty area, and this is a great opportunity for Goa. Its just off centre, and honestly, Edu Bedia couldn’t have chosen a better spot. His best bet is probably to go for goal here, but it’s actually Ortiz who takes it, and his freekick is blasted into orbit. That was well off target.

Preview: Table-toppers Mumbai City FC will look to deliver the final punch when they take on a depleted FC Goa in the second leg of their semi-finals here on Monday and earn a maiden appearance in the ISL final. Seven seasons and Mumbai City FC have never made it to the final. After securing the League Winners Shield for the first time, the Islanders will hope to achieve another feat in what has been an incredible season. Mumbai finished the first leg with a 2-2 draw, despite Goa taking the lead on two occasions. But the table-toppers were not at their best, with the Gaurs fashioning better chances and dominating the majority of the game. They registered a total of 12 shots in the first leg, more than their opponents, but only three were on target, highlighting their wastefulness in front of goal. “I am not happy (with the result),” Mumbai coach Sergio Lobera said. “We had chances to score more goals and we need to be clinical in these situations.” Goa, meanwhile, will be at a slight disadvantage after losing a few key players to injuries in the first leg. The draw in the first leg will seem like a missed opportunity for Juan Ferrando’s side, who took the lead twice in the game but saw their defence crumble under pressure. “We are not very happy because we wanted to win. The most important (thing) now is the players are 100% ready. It’s a great opportunity for us to continue to improve and continue working.” While Princeton Rebello will be out, the return of Alberto Noguera and Ivan Gonzalez will serve as a much-needed boost for Goa.
