Ding Liren and D Gukesh resume their battle after a day’s rest in the ongoing World Chess Championship, with both players aiming to break the deadlock after a hat-trick of draws in Game 7 on 3 December . Reigning champion Ding, who had beaten Russia’s Ian Nepomniachtchi last year to be become the first Chinese player to win the title, is level on three points with 18-year-old Gukesh . Both players have won one game each while four games have ended in a draw, the latest one ending in 46 moves on Sunday after Gukesh refused Ding’s initial invite for a stalemate via threefold repetition in his 26th move.
Ding had taken pre-tournament favourite Gukesh by surprise in the opening game, with the Indian GM resigning in his 42nd move. Gukesh, however, bounced back two games later with a victory in 37 moves. He has won, lost and drawn one game each so far while playing with white pieces in the World Championship.
