After moving his knight to a1, the Indian decides to gallop the piece all the way to c5 in his next two moves, threatening his opponent’s rook. Ding moves his rook away to safety, but does so only after advancing his pawn along the e file.

Gukesh decides to move his second rook to the b file as well, to which Ding retreats his queen all the way to the back along the c file. He then finally raises the white flag after Gukesh captures his remaining knight on c6 with his queen

Reigning champion Ding and Candidates 2024 winner Gukesh are currently level on five points each , with the first player to reach 7.5 points being crowned the champion.

Both Ding and Gukesh have won one game each; the Chinese Grandmaster had seized the lead with a victory in Game 1 and his 18-year-old Indian opponent bouncing back two games later , leveling the best-of-14 series at 1.5-1.5. The remaining eight games, including the last seven on the trot, have ended in a stalemate with Game 7 turning out to be quite the nail-biter as it lasted 72 moves .

Gukesh, who had become the youngest champions in Candidates history earlier this year, is aiming to become only the second Indian to be crowned chess world champion after the legendary Viswanathan Anand.
