Another World Chess Championship 2024 game between the challenger D Gukesh and the champion Ding Liren ended in a drab draw on Saturday. The World Chess Championship 2024 is tied at 5-5 after Game 10 with four games remaining. The first player to reach 7.5 points will be declared the winner but in case the scores remain tied in the battle between 18-year-old Gukesh and Ding, 32, at the end of 14 games, then tiebreakers in fast time control will be played.
Ding repeats opening but fails to press white piece advantage
Coming back to Game 10. Ding opted for a London System playing with the white pieces and repeated that opening he made in Game 6 as well . As this was the first time Ding had repeated his opening in the 2024 Championship, there was excitement to see how things would pan out this time. Gukesh added to that excitement by diverting and making a knight move.
After a quick start to the match, the middle game witnessed both players exchanging multiple pieces as they both lost a knight, bishop, a rook each, and the queens before balancing things out by the endgame.
Eventually after 36 moves and none of the players enjoying any significant advantage, they shook hands and decided to settle for a seventh consecutive draw in the World Chess Championship 2024.
They will be back for Game 11 on Sunday (8 December) with the match starting at the usual 2.30 PM IST.
Gukesh, in the post-game press conference, said that while the room for mistakes is almost negligible, he will continue to play positive chess.
“Now cost of one game is higher than before, but my approach and my goal is still the same – to play good games,” Gukesh said.
Impact Shorts
More ShortsDing added that both players cannot afford any more mistakes and will have to be careful with every move.
“There’s no so much room to make mistakes, every lose will result in very bad situation. We need to be careful with every move,” added Ding.
So far only two out of 10 games have produced conclusive results, with Ding winning Game 1 and Gukesh bouncing back with a victory in Game 3.
The World Chess Championship 2024 has a total prize money pool of USD 2.5 million.
